@HKGuns, I assume you mean hearing protection when you say ears.
When I fire unsuppressed Mosin Nagant carbines or 303 jungle carbines I normally wear two sets of hearing protection... normally ear plugs and ear muffs.
Of course a proper suppressor makes shooting much more comfortable, but where that is not an option and I want to fire a weapon with significant recoil my first choice will be a muzzle brake and additional padding of the shoulder stock.
