Flintlock as a hunting tool (T/C Firestorm?)

Thanks guys for the info on the Lyman rifles....here in Canada we do not have to register flintlocks....all other guns require registration.....I have decided to get a flintlock for hunting....I have a trapline on the Yukon border and Moose and Grizzly bear are common....I just read an article in an old issue of rifle magazine and it stated the following...
1)The round ball is not suitable for big boned game...
2)1-48"twist is no good for conicals....
All that leaves is the GP Hunter model which retails for over 500$ here

Is it true that Lyman builds the deerstalker in flint/stainless with a 1/32 twist.....
What do you think of the T/C firestorm.....stainless.....but I see it has the 1/48 twist too....what to do:banghead:

I have a T/C New Englander, .54 cal., 26" barrel, 1-48" twist. Best load I have found for it so far, in the limited shooting I have done with it, is a 425 grain Hornady Great Plains Bullet (conical) over 100 grains of 2F Goex. Three shots into two inches at 50 yards with open sights. Now, with a faster twist I may have been able to push the load closer to max (I tried, started to open up the group), but I'm pretty close to it now, and I picked this gun up for $150 used, so I'm not complaining.
Let the gun decide if it likes conicals.

Thanks, any idea how fast that 100gr is pushing that big slug....how does the recoil compare with a 30-06?

I agree with RCL, let the gun decide if it likes conicals. My Firehawk in .58 loves maxi-hunters, with a 1-48 twist.
A stoutly loaded .50 cal muzzleloader will give more of a boot than a 30-06, but it's not brutal... ya' know, no .416 Rem.

I haven't clocked the load, but I'm thinking in the 1400-1500 range.
It kicks a little harder than my .30-06, a Winchester M70 Featherweight, but it's nothing most people can't handle.

(My hardest kicking gun is a Remington 870 12 guage shotgun, when I shoot 2 ounce 3" turkey loads out of it. That thing will get your attention).

I for one would not go against a Grizzly bear with a single shot small caliber gun. Remember that the .54 Harper Ferry (actually we don't know what guns Lewis & Clark's Corps of Discovery carried) wasn't enough to stop one. Even a .58 Minie isn't surefire and I'd want a big bore double barrel Kodiak. But since we're talking flintlocks, cap lock Kodiaks are out.

I'd get one of those .69 caliber minie barrels and covert it to flintlock and shoot a .69 caliber minie ball. Yes, Ise skert of Griz.

iluv308, were you referring to over $500 Canadian for the Lyman GPH flinter?
I can buy it here in the states for about $427CAD, but that's not taking into account rules on importation or duties up there. What are your rules on shipping flintlocks across the border,and paying GST/PST for internet purchases?
