Flitz Stainless Steel Cleaner

I've used it a bit on my S&W Model 640 and my Ruger GP-100. It works pretty good to remove stubborn carbon and lead fouling. E.g., I bought my GP-100 used, and it was obvious that a lot of lead bullet .38s had been run through the gun. The cylinder flutes were BLACK. I was able to get them clean with a little Flitz on a paper towel, plus some elbow grease.

You can buy a really small tube of the stuff to see if you like it. Give it a try.

Hello Sir,
I grew up using Simichrome by Happich, been using ever since. I was given samples of Flitz at one time, probably when first hit the market - I guess and didn't give me what I wanted, if there is a stainless specific version, I was not aware of it, until now.

Yes I have used the Simichrome on stainless to remove carbon from cyl faces...and the like.

Thanks for the response's thus far.

I definitely will give the Flitz stainless cleaner a try.
But like my friend sm, I've been using Simichrome
for many year's.

I haven't bought any Simichrome in a long time. I use to
get it in the K-Mart automotive department; but now that
they have gone kuflunk, where would one look for this
product? Some marvelous results can be obtained when
using Simichrome; making stainless look almost like
nickel.

FLITZ = good stuff.

It's one of those rare brand names you can count on for a decent quality product.

(Kinda like Sig :D)

Simichrome

Harware Store my friend, good old fashioned Mom&Pop...like a good old gunshop, junk here and there, folks that know their stuff, personable, where one can still buy "one" of something out of a bin, coke from the icebox...not responsible for any other stuff you buy and drag home though.
:D

MY M&P store keeps the Simichrome b/t the cast iron skillets/ Case Kitchen knives/and Kerosene lamps if that helps...:p

I used to work in decorative hardware (thank god i'm out of that) Flitz is good stuff. Simichrome is also good and accounts for much of my lost sence of smell (the stuff is harsh).

Never had a problem with the smell of Simichrome. Then again between the diluted 28% ammonia, various acids , cyanide ( slickest stuff I ever felt and smells like almonds btw...good to know) and everything else I didn't notice.

cyanide supposedly tastes like almonds too....i'm sure that was someones last words.

"mmm...almonds" :THUD:

Hey Guy's (and Gal's, if interested ?)

After I posted my last entry, I looked up Simichrome on
the web. Low, and behold I found it at a place called:

WESTERN WOOD DOCTOR

They have the 50g tube for $6.89 + 2.50 S&H

Also, they have a new size (a tin can) for $23.89, me thinks?
Anyway, I just ordered a tube with my piece of plastic. The
tube I have been working on is well over 10 years old! :D

Thanks for the help, and sm if I find myself in need
of a kerosene heater, globe for an oil lamp, or a nice piece
of depression glass I sure will give you a holler my friend.

Best Wishes,

Fear the man who wears Liberty overalls, owns but one
gun, dips Garrett's snuff, and drives a Studebaker truck;
cuz there is a big chance he knows something about his
firearm.

Brownell's sells Simichrome (and Flitz). I have been using Simichrome since gearhead days of mid-70s...experimented with Flitz and found it very similar. Based on results polishing the acrylic crystal on a watch I own with both, I think Simichrome may be a finer polish. However, both work fine on s/s, and it's hard to imagine that a tube of Flitz specifically labeled for s/s would work any better. (?) I guess I've got a trust relationship with Simichrome...and if I was cleaning up something like an "Ultimate" finish s/s Colt, I'd prefer Simichrome.

I go to Pep Boys and buy automotive chrome polish (about $1.50 for 12 ounces) just because it's cheaper. It has almost no abrasion and works great to polish SS. It also takes the black burn rings off the cylinder face and burns off the frame around the forcing cone if you use a toothbrush.

My father who IS aclean freak(w/ cars, bikes and guns)uses Semichrome from his military days(used it to clean brass)........still uses it....his guns are SHINEY:p

I've used the plain ol' Flitz metal polish for years on just about everything, including blued guns. I'm never without it.

Try your local Harley dealer for Simichrome. I stopped in the shop here just to look around and they had a whole shelf full. Makes sense with all the chrome they put on those bikes.

Greatest Inventions of the 20th Century

The three greatest inventions of the 20th Century are:

1. Duct Tape,
2. Flitz, and
3. Renaissance Wax.

I also love Simichrome, but its quite harsh. I use Flitz first, then if necessary Simichrome second.

Used Flitz for about 20 years now, especially for polishing feed ramps.

Tip: Best thing to use on "black face" on revolver cylinders is lead-free cloth. RIG makes a good one, but there are several makers. Takes it off with minimal work.
