Greeting's All-

Just thought that I would ask, when you sworn LEO's
go 10-42 (ending tour of duty) for the day and retire
to your favorite family retreat; do you guy's and gal's
leave your duty weapon in its holster, or do you take
it out and properly secure it until the next scheduled
shift?

I have this horrible feeling that a duty weapon left
in a duty holster is NO GOOD for the weapon; even
those of stainless construction!:uhoh: In my way of
thinking, leather attracts moisture; and in most cases
moisture will turn to rust spots on blued weapons, or
tarnished spots on nickel weapon's but I'm not sure
what effects (if any) it would have on stainless steel
firearms? Thanks for reading the post, as I'm always
interested in your reply's! Looking forward to hearing
your input.

Best Wishes,

If you have a lined holster it is probably OK to leave it in without damage to the finish-- But the weight of the gun doesn't do the holster any good--You are allready carrying it 40hrs + OT a week

Most guys hang up the duty belt in the locker and put the handgun in a cloth or pistol rug on the shelf in the same locker--Unless they carry the same gun back and forth--

I`ve done both. I worked a lot by the water and you need to be careful with a blued gun. Sometimes I`d leave it in the holster but when it was humid or raining I`d wipe it down and put it on the top shelf of my locker.

Usually took my pistols off when went to gym and then put down by bed if not going back out, unless late night. Carried on and off, never noticed problem; however, usually cleaned/inspected weekly after dry practice.

You're right, just because it's "stainless" does not mean you are allowed to neglect it.:(

Un-holstered when I get home......put on bookcase.......taken upstairs when I go to bed.....placed in my nightstand.

I hang my duty rig on a nail when I get home, so the heavy stuff comes out. My flashlight and radio go on the chargers, USP45f and two spare mags go into my off-duty rig if I'm heading out for any reason, or on the nightstand if not.

Living in the (normally - it's been raining all day) dry climate of Colorado, I could probably leave the pistol holstered, but I carry the same gun off duty, so the question of rust is moot.

I basically carry it 24/7, unless I put it in a Bore-Store in the safe, and then carry my favorite: Hi Power. :D

Actually, I only have a rust problem with the "inside" grip screw of my J frame (Renegade ankle rig)......

it comes out and onto the shelf of the locker where i keep my off-duty piece. i really do it more for the leather than the gun...i had my 226 done in electroless when the blue wore through

Mine(P228) comes out of the SSIII and into a Safariland pancake holster which I leave on a shelf in my locker. I use a G-26 for off-duty.

When I was in uniform, the gun came out, droped mag, racked gun clear and wiped down with a silicone cloth. Then reloaded and into an off duty holster. (Some people thought I was AR about it).

Now that I am mostly in a suit, the gun comes out, drop the mag, rack gun clear and wipe down with a silicone cloth. Then reload and back into the off duty holster. (Some people still think I am AR about it) :p

My Commander comes out of the holster, onto the shelf near where my wife's carry pistol stays when she's home. Maybe I wipe it down, maybe not. Stays there until going back out, or until next morning.

I have a designated nightstand pistol that stays put unless I'm taking it out for practice, at which time I substitute another for it. (Wife likes to have access to a bedroom pistol, too.)

Best,
Johnny

Ah my friend Dan, you foget another advantage of my favorite holster material...Kydex :D

I've grown accustomed to doing it my way. Come home, cell phone on the charger, car keys hung on hook, both pistols out and placed on shelf in wives closet right beside the surefire light that is allways there, duty belt hung in my closet. The missus has a gun in her night stand, I have a 229 w/spare mags, light, handcuffs and spare badge in a fanny pack in my night stand. Once a week I unload and visualy inspect my using weapons, wipe them down with a silicone cloth and reload them. On the weekend my Duty pistol goes in the safe.....

Out of the holster and into the factory hardcase. If out and about in the rain that day, I'll unload and soak it in a bucket of Ed's Red for awhile.

I carry a Glock 22 in an Uncle Mikes Pro 3 nylon. All the rest of my gear is nylon due to this nasty marine environment. Belt hangs on a hook in the bedroom next to the door fully loaded and ready to go, less radio which is in a charger. House gun is a BHP.
The Glock is taken out daily and inspected. The holster is checked for dampness and salt stains. If there is a problem I just empty all the pouches, fill the tub with soapy water and dunk the belt and all, rinse and hang. It dries in a couple of hours. I always do three by-the-numbers practice draws before going out on duty just to make sure everything works.
However, any intruders at my house will more than likely be brown bears. That's why I keep a shotgun within arms reach loaded with 00Buck and Brennekes. They like to chew on the edges of my window sills.
