I will be flying out to go on a hunting trip later this month, and I need my gun in order to shoot things. I'm wondering if anyone has flown out of O'Hare (or Midway) with a firearm, and if you had any problems. Looking at the Chicago laws I seem to be ok, because I am allowed to posses "weapons broken down in a non functioning state" and registration does not apply to "Any nonresident of the City of Chicago participating in any lawful recreational firearms related activity in the city, or on his way to or from such an activity in another jurisdiction..."

Or I could just ship my rifle to myself, but that is more expensive, and then I wouldn't have it right away and I would then have to buy ammo at my destination.

So what do you all think?

As long as you follow the rules/laws to the letter, you should be fine. Be sure to check your airline's rules as well. Print a copy and have them with you.

contact the airline you are going to use and speak to a manager or person in charge. Get their name and write it down, have them direct you to where on the website the rules and regs are. Copy them and carry them with you.

The first time flying in or out of a different place is always some of a hassle the first time because of lack of knowing the ins and outs. The second time is always easier.

The reason for carrying the papers with the regs is just in case when you arrive and the agent is telling you the rules the way they see them vs the way that they really are.

I've flown from O'Hare several times with a handgun in my checked luggage with no problems. It has been also the only place where the clerk at the ticket counter asked to see the gun was unlaoded (thet are entitled to). Follow the rules and you'll be okay.

How much would it be to ship it? $30 round trip UPS? I would be more worried it would get lost or stolen en'route. You could ship it to yourself, I guess thats pretty common.
