FM Hi Power Detective slide is moving too fast.

I think I finally found out why FM Detective jams when I DON'T limp wrist it. I think the slide is moving too fast when I hold it firmly. I think the factory dual recoil springs can't slow the short slide enough for reliable functioning.

What can I do to improve functioning under ALL conditions? I don't want to have to hold this gun loosely just so it won't jam. I want to hold all my guns the same and not have to think about that foolishness. Where can I get a stonger recoil spring for the Detective? Am I up a creek because I didn't get a standard length slide?

I love this gun and I am prepared to put up with it if it but I really want it fixed.

I saw your post on FN Hipower forums regarding the detective. I'm the "anonymous" that suggested your slide is moving to fast.

The Detective slide/barrel setup is dimensionally similar to a CZ Compact.
Ive used Wolff springs in all of my Comps with outstanding luck. 18 or 20# springs work with the travel distance/speed and slide weight. I cant see how your detective would differ from the CZ that the spring weight wouldnt work.
Call Wolff...talk to their tech guy...tell him you need a recoil spring for a HP but "" shorter than the full length gun..they should be able to set you up.....
You will have to lose the dual recoil spring setup most likely....no biggie.

Could also be the springs in the magazine.

Try different brands of ammo and take the mags down, clean them out, lube them lightly, and put in new springs from Wolff.

Just a shot in the dark. If I'm wrong, it's something you would have to have done eventually anyway.

WonderNine, yeah that was me over on the Hi Power site, thanks for the tip. I did some experimenting and I think you are right, the is moving too fast. That would explain the stovepipes and the excessive recoil for a 9mm. Someone said it might be the extractor but I have ruled that out because it only happends when I hold the gun frimly and not when I limp wrist it. When I limp wrist it, it lets the gun move back in my hand enough to absorb some of the energy from the recoil and saps some of that energy from the slide which should slow it down some. When I do this, it works fine, kind of the opposite from the common effect of limp wristing.

I am not an expert so if anyone has a better idea of what is going on, I am all ears.

I am talking to a guy from Wollf now, he doesn't seem to think it is the recoil spring but I haven't explained it all to him yet.

Can I just buy a spring for a standard BHP and cut it down coil by coil until it works?
