I own an FM M95 Classic. Shoots great and is an amazing value. It's a little persnickety about ammo but that means I buy only brass not steel or coated cases. CCI all brass cheapo feeds just fine, as does all the low end Brass ammo.
A freind of mine states that RIA 1911A1's are a good place to start if you want to build a .45. States as well that they do what they are designed to do out of the box. (I know I don't like the look or feel of the smooth wood grips) and I would probably get a new Adjustable trigger right away. It's just that most of the people he knows buy them to customize them, as a frame and slide alone can cost as much as the RIA.
Penates, welcome to THR. Step one(if you already haven't)is handle them both and see which one feels best to you. If you don't reload, 9mm costs about half as much as .45acp, if ammo cost is important to you. I have no personal experience with either of these two particular pistols, so please keep this in mind. I have HEARD that FMs are usually ready to go out of the box and that the RIA 1911's sometimes need a little tweaking. Hopefully some owners will chime in shortly.
