FN 5.7x28mm

My only question would be "Why?" If it's 'just because' or you're just curious, that'll do.. I bought a couple of .357sigs based on that logic, unfortunately. I must admit I'm intrigued by the gun too. But I always find something better to buy. :D Maybe after the next one...

I have had one since they first became available in the US and I am very pleased with the gun. The function has been outstanding and I have had no issues requiring repair. (Which is both good for me, but bad for the purposes of providing purchase advice since I can't comment on service at the company level.) The gun is a good 'pointer' and recoil is practically non-existant.

I bought it to get a high cap, light recoil gun for my wife and daughter to share, the former about 5' and 100 pounds and my 24 year old daughter (who is a grad student in Nashville and drives up and back from home on vacation) only a bit taller and heavier. They found the gun a joy to use, and my daughter has taken it out for some impromptu 'tactical shoots' at school where it excels. The last time I was down there with her, I participated starting out with a custom built 45 ACP. I switched over to the FN and found it was a 'faster' gun in the sense I could tap out a lot of rounds virtually the same as if I was firing a 22LR (which a friend of hers was using in a highly modified 'tactical' Ruger 22/45, but that is another story).

But the prior poster has a point. What are you buying it for? The gun was designed to deal with body armor and helmets. It is a flat shooting, light recoil cartridge but will be more expensive to 'feed' than a 9mm or 45. A fun gun, but rather specialized. Dave

I've been interested in one of these as an anti-armidillo:evil: weapon, but I cannot find out what kind of trigger these have. Are they DA/SA , DAO????

I have one and basically what Dnovo said is true, it feels like shooting a .22 Not much kick, muzzle flash is practically non-existant. Its EXTREMELY light, seriously with 20 rounds loaded in the mag, it is one of the lightest guns I have. Only problem is the price of the round. I generally pay between 20-25 a box for the SS196 (the balistic red tip) and around 30 for the SS195 (the hollow lead free) round. I you have the cash, go for it before the brady bunch seize the opportunity.

it is a single action...the hammer is located inside grip and hits the firing pin....if you look at it disassembled, it almost looks like a striker fired gun (glock, sigma), but there is an internal hammer that must be cocked (racking the slide) before it is fired.

I have just had a thought (which is very dangerous:D ). What if FN made a say .17 HMR/.22 Mag. conversion unit (barrel, slide, mag, springs as needed)? Or some of the "clone gnomes" could be persuaded to make a close knock-off (pistol) in above calibers (at a more reasonable price tag..... I bet it would sell well).
BTW I handled a buddy's 5-Seven at the range a week ago (didn't shoot it because I was on my way out as he came in). Very light and it fit in my long fingered mits, I have a CZ-52 with the Hogue slip-on grip that fits me very well and also is in the Brady Bunch's sights.

why is all the ammo for it restricted??

Not all of the FN 5-Seven's ammunition is restricted just the Millitary/LEO (unless you call the price for civilian ammo restricted:eek: ) because of its ability to defeat most LEO soft body armor or so says the BATF & Bradys:scrutiny: . The ammo amounts to be a supersonic ice pick(BTW an ice pick can also defeat most levels of soft body armor but don't tell the Brady Gun Ban Bunch:rolleyes: ).

Is the FN automatic or semi automatic?

and is it plastic or metal?

It is a semi-auto...I haven't heard of a select-fire version

The frame is plastic and the slide is covered in polymer with the steel slide underneath...when you look at it, it looks entirely plastic.

Any idea why not? They're centerfire, aren't they?

they are reloadable ( i dont reload), it is hard to get the dies, bullets, and even the brass....so basically, its hard to get the supplies.

that would be pretty cool for a conversion...would make it easier on the wallet for the ammo! A couple of buddies of mine who are interested in the five seven have opted to get the cz 52 instead. the 7.62x25 TOK round will penetrate lev IIA vests from what I heard and it is very cheap to purchase. The cz 52 makes an impressive range gun especially the muzzle flash.

Sure it can.

Affording the $19/50 rounds the FN begs for will be tough. Shooting that bad boy culd get real expensive. Last I heard you can't reload them either.

There is a whole section at www.fivesevenforum.com regarding reloading. A lot of good information. The general concensus is that it is not for the reloading novice but can be reloaded effectively and safely.
