Been looking at picking up a new 308 bolt rifle. I've narrowed my choices down to either:
FN A1 SPR .308, 24" barrel
or
STEYR SSG PII .308, 25.6" barrel

The rifle will be used exclusively for target shooting from a bench at 100-600yds.

The Steyr is about $300 more than the FN. Anyone have recommendations to make on either of these rifles?

Have been shooting my FN SPR in F Class Competition for several years now. Nothing but good to say about it. Love the chrome-lined barrel - haven't cleaned it in two years now.

I had an SSG for a number of years, it was the P1 medium contour barrel and double set triggers ... was a hell of a gun but it just got to where I didn't get it out to shoot it enough. When it sat for about 3 years I decided to get something I'd make more use of. I seem to be moving away from the larger calibers as I get older ... Never thought I'd see the day but I just tire of them quicker than I do the 22, 223 and 762x39.

I have a FN SPRA1 that I bought back in 2006. Yesterday I shot a 5 inch 5 shot group at 800m. It's very accurate with factory ammo, I really need to cook up some handloads and see what I can do. From everything I have read handloads make it a sub half MOA gun. I'm sitting at half MOA with 168 GMM. The chrome barrel is awesome. I get done shooting, and run a boresnake through about 4 times, and the barrel and chamber sparkles. There was an issue with a limited number of barrels having problems with the chrome flaking off, but if you have the problem FN will make it right, and that was only a few barrels when they were moving the factory. Be very careful cutting down the barrel or threading it; I have heard of people having issues with that as well. Other than that it's a sweet rifle, everyone that shoots mine wants their own. If you have any questions just PM me, I'll be as helpful as I can.

Gadinort--If you like a really nice double set trigger, you'll LOVE the SSG PII!!

The SPR's accuracy is fantastic, great overall package right out of the box.

I've said it a few times, and I'll say it again, I really cant say enough good things about my SPR.

Thanks. As I told LRS_Ranger in a PM, it's a 1st Gen SPR, of which they only made about 650 of. I was one of 12 individuals selected by McMillan to test and evaluate the pre-production A5 stock about 7 years ago. I had George Gardner at GA Precision install and bed it (they also bed the current top-of-the-line SPR's). It's a .308 (that's all they made the 1st Gen rifle in), and I have probably about 500 rounds thru it, which is nothing what with it's estimated barrel life of 15,000 rounds.
