I found a Steyr Scout rifle chambered for .308 which I have incoming to my FFL dealer. I bought a threaded barrel model as I'd heard barrel removal and re-installation is a factory-only service meaning my gunsmith would not be able to thread a non-threaded barrel for me.

I haven't been able to learn what the thread pitch is on the rifle, tried about everything short of calling Steyr. I plan to use the rifle suppressed, my can is setup for 5/8-24 thread pitch.

Wondering if anyone might know what the Steyr Scout 308 thread pitch is?

I know the Steyr Aug uses a metric pitch which has me guessing this one does as well.

A .308 can't be a 1/2"x28.

Industry standard is that for .223.
.308 standard is 5/8"x24.

But I have no idea if Steyr adheres to U.S. Industry standards?
I'd almost bet they do though.

Unless it's 1x18mm???
But the barrel is too slim for that, I think?

I called Steyr this morning, the guy said 1/2"x20. I have a gut feel he missed the part where I told him it is a 308 rifle.

Must be the barrel is too light / small diameter for standard .308 5/8"x24 muzzle threads???

It is unusual though.

The various threading standards for various calibers are based on preventing someone screwing a .223 muzzle device on a larger bore rifle.

Hard to squeeze a .308" bullet through a .224" hole in the end of the barrel!

I guess 1/2"x20 is plenty different enough nobody will be screwing a AR-15 Comp on one by mistake though! :D

I called YHM who made my suppressor (Phantom Ti, QD), asked them if they can make me a custom QD brake with that thread, or an adapter.

There are off-the-shelf adapters to go from 1/2x20 to 1/2x28, then to 5/8x24, just don't want this to look like something Fred Flintstone cobbled together with Barney while drinking Dyno-Mite whiskey at the Stone Bar & Grill :)

it's interesting. while trying to find you an answer, it seems that the threaded barrels are of thicker contour than the non-threaded.

was YHM willing to work with you? if not, i'm sure you can find someone to make you that specific adapter.

Might be prudent to wait until you got it in your hot & sweaty hands before you do anything!!!

Take some measurements of the actual thread diameter & pitch on the rifle first before you jump in with both feet!

Well, I should have the rifle next week but, while waiting:

Heard nothing back from YHM, doesn't surprise me.

Silencer Shop discovered that YHM makes a 1/2"x28 threaded flash hider QD mount for my suppressor. A 1/2"x20 to 1/2"x28 thread adapter is readily available.

Silencer Shop also recommended I talk to TROSUSA about a custom thread adapter. Mark at TROS offered to make a 1/2"x20 to 5/8"x24 for a very fair price. The advantage to me being that I can then use the YHM muzzle brake QD mount instead of the flash hider. I have the muzzle brake mount on all my other suppressor host 30 cal rifles, I find it works 85% to 90% as well as any of the premium brakes I've tried.

I've ordered up parts for both so that shooting the rifle will be the final arbiter.
