I was watching a video about the SCAR and noticed FN claims the barrel life on the 5.56 NATO version to be around 35,000 rounds. How is this possible? Isn't the current barrel life of a chrome lined gov't profile barrel about 15,000 rounds?

Well, different barrel steels and rifling types can make the accuracy life of the barrel longer... I would certainly be skeptical of anyone proclaiming it to be that much longer, though.

But, then again, the SCAR has been coming out "this" year for the past several "this years". I'll believe it when I see it!

Not to mention that measuring barrel life without stating the conditions of use is kind of like printing the muzzle velocity of a cartridge without mentioning that you used a 42" barrel to get that number.

A barrel that is fired once every 10 minutes in 50F is going to last a lot longer than one doing multiple full-auto mag dumps in 130F.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there is a steel that is much more durable than 4150 or 4140 chrome moly that you could actually afford to use for a gun barrel. If thats the case I doubt they got 35,000 rounds unless they call a shot out barrel one that can't even function as a barrel anymore.

^ Yeah, I'm thinking the 35K spec is how long it takes for that barrel to turn into a shotgun barrel chambered in 5.56 NATO.
