Can someone recommend a foaming bore cleaner that actually works? I have used the break-free foaming bore cleaner in the past but I can no longer find it.

What do you want it to foam for? I've used some, just cause it was available, but the foaming IMHO kind of make it messy and wastes a lot.

I have tried several. I don’t care for any of them. More mess than they are worth. If I have a really grungy bore I insert a rubber plug (Ace Hardware has them) And fill the bore with Hoppe’s or Break Free and leave it set overnight. I actually haven’t done that in years. Works great for milsurp guns.

Edit: I hate auto-correct

The break free foam does take off hard carbon fouling like nothing else I’ve ever tried. That it cleans copper too is just a bonus for me.

I generally only use the foam every 1000 rounds or about yearly.

For some reason I can’t find the break free foaming bore cleaner anywhere not even online. Maybe they no longer make it?

Barnes is pretty good but be careful to not let it sit too long, a couple minutes. Hoppes copper and lead is very good and they make a foaming one in the same flavor. It cleaned out my Glock bore and chamber really nice.

On a whim I bought some Hoppes foaming Bore cleaner at WM probably a year ago. Just about a month ago I finally tried it on a S&W model 39-2 that had sort of a scrunchy trigger. I didn't think the gun was all that dirty but I was surprised how much gunk ran out of the trigger area. And what a difference it made on the trigger pull and feel. Next time I am at WM and think about it I will see if they still sell it and if they do I will buy a couple of bottles to have on hand. I am not one to try new things since the old stuff I have been using forever works but in this case I learned a new trick.

I tried some once. Didn’t do anything that #9 didn’t. I honestly think they’re kind of a waste of time and make a mess. Look at all the different products on the market. I’ve tried them all. Never found anything special. They all pretty much accomplish the same task. Then again, I clean after every range session. 5 rounds fired or 500. Never found the need for some Wonder Elixir.

Or perhaps, any elixir.

Schuemann Barrels on barrel cleaning

My Personal Practice has become to never clean the bore of my barrels. I do use a brass rod to scrape the deposits out of the chamber. But, I've learned to leave the bore alone and it very slowly becomes shinier and cleaner all by itself. Years ago I occasionally scrubbed the bore with a brass bore brush. But, doing so always seemed to cause the bore to revert to a dirtier look with more shooting, so I eventually stopped ever putting anything down the bore except bullets...
