What other ways are there to carry folding knives but have them handy besides clipped on the front pocket? It has dawned on me that the clip is somewhat of a giveaway, particularly when it contrasts with the pants. For example a worn bare silver clip on new jeans or black clip on khakis.
Like a concealed handgun, I think if they can't see it, fearful folk won't get the vapors and bad guys won't open with a counter to it.

Any ideas, or am I overanalyzing this?

I can't think of anyone that would say anything about a knife being clipped in your pocket... I even took my little bro to school to get his class schedule (high school) in a VERY liberal part of town, and no one said a thing. I did plenty of walking around for the hour he waited in line.

Leatherman PST fits well in the breast pocket of a Carhart jacket. SAK's and traditional knives often fit well deep in the pocket. And, as someone else mentioned, belt sheaths are an option too. I personally think they scream knife, but people have all sorts of stuff on their belts now...

Clipped back right pocket (had to adjust to moving my wallet to the left...what a bitch). Easy to draw and my shirt always covers my back pockets enough so it's not easily visible unless you're staring at my butt.

I carry a BM 520(rather large knife) clipped in the right front pocket---never seems to draw attention----sometimes I keep my cell phone clipped the pocket next to it---the clip is invisable then.

If you have the right sheath and your shirt is untucked, the back of the belt is also decent.

A knife is a daily-use tool. Anything CAN be used defensively, but a knife should be near the last choice. Clips secure your knife in a known, easily accessible position.

I overanalyzing this?

Yes, you are.

I've carried a knife clipped to my pocket or waistband all over the country almost every day for the past 15 years (when I got my first Spyderco) and no one has gotten a case of the vapors or ever even seemed to mention it.

I agree with HSO - I've carried a Spyderco cliped in my pocket for over 20 years without any hassles. If I am carrying a knife for social purposes, it will be in addition to my EDC, and carried IWB (various places) or in a neck sheath that allows me to deploy the blade on the drawstroke.

I carry it in my back, right pocket (Same trouble Phelptwan had with switching wallet pockets) with my shirt tucked in on a college campus....no problems at all yet.

At what point in our history did a pocket knife become so evil?

It is an everyday tool. I don't take any special precautions in hiding mine. I never could anyway. You can tell exactly what pocket and what type of knife I carry simply by looking at the worn area of my pants pockets. The clip is the least of the giveaways.

I could have not responded, but quite frankly the constant threads on where to carry a knife and will the bogey-man notice are starting to hack me off.

I've carried pocket-clipped knives for about six years now (yes I'm young), and I've only twice gotten any issue at all, both times from bouncers at dance-clubs. These clubs didn't have specific signs saying "no knives", but I was politely asked to either take it back to my car or leave it with the bouncer.

I honestly think that most people don't notice it at all. We only notice because we're into that sort of thing. It's kind of like if you asked me if I'd seen any "Chevrolet Model 4XZ" this week. I wouldn't think to even look for one in the first place, so it would never jump out at me.

vertically situated . . . . .

next to my wallet on the outside seam of my back pocket. Unless your pockets are huge neither the knife nor the wallet move around. It works better with more traditionally styled knives rather than the tactical designs but is very comfortable and unobtrusive.

I'm of the mind that the knife clipped to my pocket isn't for fighting. Heck, it's probably too dull from cutting boxes, plastic strapping, cleaning my nails... Had I any notion to fight I'd have a fixed blade.

Sure, you can improvise with it if you have to, but personally I'd rather go barefisted, or use something already handy (ashtray? beverage? gas pump handle?) than go to the trouble of deploying my dinky, blunted utility blade.

See first: Don Rearic.
See next (if you can't get the knife idea out of your head): SouthNarc.

Computer/electronic stuff comes in tough plastic packaging these days, so even geeks carry knives clipped ino their pockets. I tend to carry pocket knives down inside my pockets, inside something like an Uncle Mike's pocket holster, to protect the pocket lining, because I have lost or damaged a few knives when the pocket clip snagged on something.

I always have 1 or 2 knives clipped in my pockets but have never had a single inquiry about it. What you pull out of your pocket and use can raise eyebrows though- Something like a spyderco delica will draw no attention whatsoever, but it seems like every time I've used my Spyderco Endura 4, people's eyes get wide as saucers. The endura 4 isn't that much bigger than a Delica, but the blade looks a lot like a dagger.
