Well I am not done with these yet but I think they turned out so good I just had to post up some pics of it so far. I made two so far and I already had a buddy ask me to make him a smaller one so I am gonna made one that fill hold 8 total, 4 on each side. These ones will hold 16 rifle, 8 on each side.

I still need to sand them and stain and clear them and I will add some felt on the bottom and in the cut outs on top.

35W x 32H x 7D

I will post more pics as I complete these

I like it too.

Maybe a 1/2-round down on the outer edge of the lower cross-piece to retain butts better?

And some felt, or perhaps some of that rubber weather stripping stuff as a bumper...

Thanks folks. Yes I will be putting felt on the them too. I was hoping to get time today to work o them guy I got tied up at work.

Very nice! I've been looking for a solution like this for a while. Mind if I call my soon-to-follow (non-commercial) reproductions "Spleify Racks"? :)

Guns hanging from coat hangers, trophy antlers, lighting fixtures etc. have been a constant problem for several years when we've had around 10 people hunting grouse and everybody wants to bring a shotgun AND a rifle.

nice design...think it needs to beefed up a bit...16 rifles at 8-10 pounds each will really put those hinges to the test and the chains should be a solid piece to both keep the racks moving....the workmanship shows you're an accomplished cabinet maker?

That looks sharp. I've always liked to do wood working. I agree with the previous observations about the hinges. I like piano hinges, because the stress is distributed across all of the width. Then again, I tend to "over-build". Too, the ladder spreader/lock might work more effective when under full-load.

By the way, my birthday is coming up in May...hint.

Thanks for the kind words folks. The ladder spreaders, or locking hing type was actually in my original design but I could not find them anywhere. If anyone has advice where to get them, let me know.

I am not at all concerned about the weight on this. It is very beefy and sturdy. Might not look like it in the pics, but she aint going anywhere.

I love the name "Spleify Racks" I may have to use that name!!

Thanks again for the kind words and advice.

Last time I was at Scheels they had a rack that looks just like that with some rifles on it. Anyways looks pretty good.
