I have built a rifle rack to store my growing collection. The rack will be inside my Vault, which I am also constructing.

What is a good design for a rifle rack? It has to be big and hold the rifles upright. I thought I had one, until the other day when I came home and discovered that my CZ 452 trainer had somehow fallen on the floor!!!! fortunately it was undamaged. I blame it on the design of the stock which makes it touchy as to staying upright.
The vibration genrated by my children playing may have also contributed to the fall.

If you folks have any pictures of the designs you have used please post them. Have you used some type of retention system to keep rifles from falling over in a earthquake, if so what are they like?

Thanks

I would suggest storing the rifles horizontally, rather than vertically. Two reasons:

1. The rifle would be held at at least two points, and long/sturdy "hooks" can be used, making it much more difficult to knock it down (even in an earthquake):

2. This removes constant pressure on the recoil pad. I've seen some long guns that had been stored upright for twenty to thirty years, and the recoil pad was completely junked. By taking pressure off it, it's likely to last longer.

Thanks, I dont have room for Horizontal, most of my .22 rifles have a hard buttplate so the pad wont be trashed. This storage is not for display purposes.

Anyone out there have a vault with upright racks that they built or bought??

Thanks
