I recently put a Tapco side folder on my AK and I'm not quite liking it. It's not the quality, fit or finish, those are actually quite good. It's just a hair longer than I like.

Can anyone recommend some other type of folding stock, please? Just to put this out there, I really do not like the under folder stocks.

I know I could always put the fixed stock back on and I'm tempted. But I'd still like to hear what you folks have to say!

Check with ACE stocks... They have different LOP's listed for their AR folders and I suspect the same can be said for their AK units. Top notch stuff; I bought one of the AR-types for a SCAR-CQB stock. If I could remember it I'd post the website but you can do a search and find it.

There's also a Romanian steel side-folder that you can find for around $50-$60. I have one on my WASR and it's pretty short, it's the same length as the original AK wood stock.

Looks like this:

The Romanian stock pictured above is probably the best of the side-folders that do not require you to modify the rear of the receiver.

+1 on the Romanian sidefolder.

Now if you are willing to pay a gunsmith to install an AK100 series folder, then get one of those. K-Var has both the sidefolders from the AK74SU and US made AK100 series side folders. Those folders are the same short length Warsaw pact buttstocks and lock rigidly into place. My AK100 folder really does feel like a solid buttstock. The drawback is the cost of both installation and folder but it is something to think about as an option.

I was also going to recommend the Romy folder, but i see it's been already been properly endorsed. Other than being a little heavy, it's a great unit. It's probably your most economical option for a quality folder, but I'm seeing them around less and less lately.
I also really like the FN/Galil look of the ACE folder, but DAMN them things are expensive !!

I've only heard good things (as folders go) about the Romanian side-folding unit. I believe it may also be an identical East German design (could be wrong). Regardless, I picked one up for about $50 and it is nice...for a folding stock. It is short just like the wooden stock and lightens up the rifle nicely.

However, unless I absolutely wanted to make the rifle more compact for transport I would stay with the wooden stock. Obviously you won't be firing the rifle with the stock folded. I found the stock wooden stock too short and the folder feels even stranger. If I ever had to take my WASR out for some serious shooting I would slap the wooden stock back on.
