I am looking for a replacement stock for my pre-ban AK and was wondering if anybody has tried TAPCO's new folding AK stock yet? Here.

I have read on another board that it is a bit on the flimsy side - not really designed for 'rugged' use. Any ideas?

I prefer the FAL/Galil pattern side folding stocks and if this one isn't the hot setup, does anyone have experience fitting a Galil folder to a stamped receiver AK? How hard would it be and what sort of modifications would be necessary?

Thanks.

Have not tried it, but read some other posts about 'em at AK-47.net. Yes, there have been some complaints about flimsiness. Also, it covers the safety and most of the trigger when folded, so its not good for shooting in the folded position (if you care about that.)

I got an "official" Romanian folder instead. Drop-in installation in 10 mins, nice and tight, and decent cheek weld when open. $38 delivered. Here's where I got it.

I put one on my AK. It's pretty comfortable, but I don't think I'd want to buttstroke somebody with it. It's 2" longer than a standard AK stock so it may fit a lot of folks betters.

The Galil-style hinge is on the right side. Since I am left handed, this means that it often bumps my nose when I shoot. It's not painful -- my rifle is in 7.62x39 and has a brake -- but it's annoying.

The advantage of having the stock fold to the right is that you don't have to remove any optics attached to a left-side receiver rail.

Here's mine. Pretty quick install took like 5 minutes. I don't think I would trust any plastic to hit someone with.

I got one too. It aint the prettiest, but its rock solid, open or closed, the correct length when open, and not in the way of either the saftey or trigger when folded. Its more comfortable than it looks, the cheek weld isnt bad, and it shoulders just like a regular AK stock.

Daemon688, how did you attach your AK74 muzzle brake to your Saiga? Did you cut off the muzzle cover of the FSB and thread it? Or is a set screw, press on, JB weld deal?

Isn't Robinson Arms getting their folders from Ace? Those look sturdy, though admittedly I haven't had the opportunity to handle one yet.

ditto

I prefer the AR15 to AK stock adapter and a AR15 telescoping stock over the tapco and others. then again I am right handed and most look like they cover either the safety or trigger. $20 for adapter $20-$30 for stock or if you want high quality or something real good $50-$100

cutting off the shroud to the front sight base is pain in the ass. first attempt did not go great. be great if you could get the front sight base off but from my understanding its a real tight fit. took pins out tried hammering at it no budge. most I have seen people cut off the saiga front sight base and replace with AKM/AK74. I took dremel to shroud. first attempt sucked cut into the barrel few spots though can still thread without problems. second attempt came out excellent. still have piece of shroud to work off not in a hurry though. can go with 14x1LH(standard AK) or 1/2x28(standard AR15). if you cut into barrel some 1/2x28 would be better. easier to cut off front sight and thread barrel then to cut shroud. though is also more expensive.

Robinson Armament is going to be offering a Galil type folder for their VEPR and for the stamped AK receivers. It will be all machined aluminum. It is the nicest looking folder I have seen. Robinson Armament

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

I used to have an E. German folder (same as Romanian) on it and it looked real cool, locked up nice and tight and was great for compactness, but I got rid of it because it just wasn't comfortable to fire the rifle with.

I may just have to plunk down my money and take a chance on the TAPCO stock.

Related but somewhat OT...

Does anybody know of a source for genuine Romanian side-folders? I've been looking but have come up empty. I'd love to put one om my SAR-2, and since I'm a bit of a short fellow the original (Warsaw Pact) length stock fits me fine.

TIA

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread...

Before the ban went away, they were going for half that. Didnt take them long to catch up, eh?. So just what got cheaper after the ban anyway?
