$$$ for a ruger mini 30, or $ for a SKS?

If hunting's in the cards at all, that needs an optic, and that points me towards a Mini 30.

If this is just for iron-sights blasting, the SKS will give you all the yuks at half the cost.

There's something almost obscene about the idea of hunting with either of these scatterguns.

If blasting cheap ammo at pop cans at 20 yards, then, well, either will do. Yuks indeed.

For me, both are just yuck.

I don't agree, but then hunting covers such a wide swath of situations. For most animals under say 75 to 100 yards, the 154 tula sp, 123 fusion sp, or 150 corbon will do just fine in either gun stalking the woods. 200, 300, or more yards away across a picked field or mountain valley, it's not even close enough accuracy or trajectory.

I don't have a Mini-30 but I do have a 14. I'm surprised that a 30 shoots so poorly without a brace. My 580 series 14 shoots 3-4 MOA which probably isn't as good as some AR's but it's good enough for me. The gas block is pretty easy to regulate and it's easy to find someone to do a trigger job. For me the design of the rifle was what sold me. I'm a fan of the 30 carbine and the Ruger is just an improved 30 carbine. If you want a Mini I wouldn't wait too long to buy one as prices continue to creep up.
