That post about that tiger attack got me thinking about an excellent book I have for those who like the muzzleloading double barreled shotgun/rifle is "A Hunter's Life in South Africa" written by R. Gordon Cumming.

Here;

http://www.amazon.com/Hunters-South...d=1421510078&sr=8-3&keywords=R+Gordon+Cumming

Mentions the used of double rifles built by James Purdey, John Dickson, William Moore among others while hunting in Africa in the 1840's.

I have two SxS shotguns and have that book. It was hard to finish the book because the author, Cumming, is just a wanton killer. He's into numbers and kills as many of everything as he can whether there is any need or use for the dead animal.

The series has many good books but this is not one of them IMO.

A very good book in the series is "The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia" by Sir Samuel White Baker or "The Maneaters of Tsavo" by J. H. Patterson.

He is and those are tough parts to get through. The part I found the toughest was where he was running his horses into the ground every chance he got and seemingly could care less for their welfare or depleted condition.

The parts though I found the most interesting was the use of named firearms, some still being built today, in the most extreme environment under the most brutal of conditions.

I'll have to look for those books also.
