Okay maybe two questions...

1. If you carry one, what is your trunk long gun?

2. How many rounds do you store with your rifle/carbine/shotgun in your trunk?

I'm using an AR with 6-30 round mags. Just wondering.

the one that was sleeping under the back seat of my Bronco was a Mosin-Nagant M44.

I kept a full magazine as well as 5 or so stripper clips. The stripper clips weren't the greatest quality although they do work most of the time and are not required to reload the magazine.

-edit- strippe clips hold 5 rounds.

My behind-the-rear-seat truck rifle was a SLR-95, in a partially unzipped assault case, with 6-30 rd mags and another 1000 rds in an ammo can in the tool box.

Since it was stolen, I've tried a WASR-10 and hated it. I once had a SAR1 that I bought for $198, and I've been looking for another one, but they seem to have rocketed up to about $400.

For long trips I throw my M4rgery and a half-a-dozen 30 rounders back there, but I get real nervous when I think about losing it.

Also, I'm not all that excited about a "long" gun with a 10.5" barrel. I guess I gain capacity, rate of fire and higher energy ammo....but I'd like a little more range.

Been thinking about a Lee Enfield 308.
Seems like a few considerations for a trunk gun are....
Cheap
Accurate
Appropriate rate of fire(bolt or semi)
Short enough?
same caliber as other BR
I would say proficiency approaching that of your real main gun that was more expensive is important. You'd more than likely have the trunk gun when you need a gun.

Six thirty-round mags? Wow.

I usually carried a SKS with ten rounds, or a No4Mk1 with a five rounds in a cut-down magazine.

Used to be Saiga.

Saiga .308. Can't get magazines for the damned thing. Sold it.
Now it's a Mossy 500 with Ghost Ring sights and 25 rounds of ammo-15 00buck and 10 rifled slugs.

well...backseat

marlin lever action .44 mag it holds 10, box of 50 jhp on the floor

Here's what I just posted in another thread about vehicle handguns/guns:

......

As for inexpensive vehicle rifles - remember, the only purpose of your (car) handgun is to shoot your way to your (car) rifle, I would also divide those into 2 categories - those kept in the trunk, and those kept in the cab of a pickup or passenger area. If in the trunk, my view is that it need not be so perfectly PC looking, cuz no LEO is gonna see it unless you've grabbed it, which means the S has HTF, and looking PC is not so important anymore. Plus, a trunk gun can arguably stand to be more valuable than a cab gun, since it's less likely to be stolen, as trunks are a little more secure, and no visual invitation to steal is present. So a Saiga 16" in .308 is probably the perfect trunk gun. But kept in the cab or passenger area of a vehicle, my opinion is that it may behoove you with certain LEO members if stopped to have a more PC-looking gun in there - the best choice is probably something like a Lee Enfield No.5 or No. 7 jungle carbine in .308 or .303 brit, or regular SMLE. But also a pump shotgun, a levergun in .30-30, .357, .44 mag, SKS, or other milsurp like a M44, M38 Mosins, etc. Maybe even an M1 carbine, but they're a little pricey to risk being stolen. Right now my truck gun is a No.4 Mk 1 in .303, with 2 10 round mags - one with mil ball ammo for SHTF, and one with 180 soft points for opportunistic feral pig shots.

I have a tonneau cover on my pickup. I am curious if there is any restriction on a long arm back there legally. I'll have to see how the new Texas traveling law is set up. Never thought about carrying one before.

I would probably go with a cheap lever gun first. Plenty of power and I would trust it more than a semi-auto considering it would be sitting back there indefinitely in Texas heat.

When I drove mostly pickups around, I'd rivet a scabbard to the underside of the roof of the cap/topper/camper shell/whateveryouwannacallit and store a Marlin 30/30 in it. From outside the truck, it was faster to get than to get the Enfield behind the front seat, and was invisible during a casual walkaround.

Have any of you had rusting problems with a rifle/shotgun in your car or truck? Does it get covered with condensation, when the car has gotten very cold in the winter and then it warms up when the heater starts running?

Heat doesn't seem to bother my AK and Vegas gets HOT in the summer.

Keep it maintained (which means cleaned and oiled) and it always runs. That being said, you'll notice I have a bolt action in my truck.

When i'm just out and about tooling around town i dont keep anything in my trunk. I keep a mossberg 500 12ga and a 50 round bandolier in the trunk on camping trips and such. I havent had any rust problems yet, once a month i pull it out and clean it.

AR-pistol with one 10 rounder in it, and two USGI mags,"coupled" together

If 70 rounds of .223 or 5.56 out of a 10 1/2 " barrel traveling around 2750 fps doesn't stop the threat, it is time to beat a hasty retreat...

Plus, the chrome-lining on the barrel and bore, make me worry less about rust issues even in this climate, but oddly enough I worry about the heat variations through outt the day. I left my M4gery in the backseat of my car in it's case, and upon taking it out of the car and inside, the gun was almost too hot to handle. Making me think that accuracy would be suspect from that hot barrel even though it's an H-bar...I will have to leave the MP-AR pistol in it's case in the trunk and see if that keeps it a little cooler, but negates the cool factor of being able to conceal the thing on or near me(with papers of course CCW). :( !

PS Sometimes the WASR-AK takes the ride, as I think that variety is the spice of life. The only reason the M4 usually stays home is that it does not have a collapsable stock and the AK break which makes it louder(but ever so soft on recoil), and the Carry handle mounted red-dot gun is not able to be placed in the case without being ,"Broken Down", into to halves....

WASR-AK....reliable, powerfull, and I dont lose a lot of money if someone breaks into my trunk--Its happened before!

My trunk guns

When I actually needed a trunk gun, it was an M-16 in the back seat, partner had one in the cabin, or vise-versa.
Now that I'm a family guy with a factory job, 12ga. mossy with 00 loads for weekend trips.
BTW, 180 rounds for the 16's (each) and 15 or 20 for the 12ga.

Mine is a WASR-10 with a 40-round mag (safety off, chamber empty) and 4 spare 30-rounders.

I have been thinking about picking up another M44 Russian Nagant for just this purpose. I like this rifle because it is cheap, accurate in my hands, and fires a pretty decent round.

I have a tonneau cover on my pickup. I am curious if there is any restriction on a long arm back there legally.

This would be my biggest concern:

Texas Penal Code § 46.13. MAKING A FIREARM ACCESSIBLE TO A CHILD.
(a) In this section:
(1) "Child" means a person younger than 17 years of age.
(2) "Readily dischargeable firearm" means a firearm that is loaded with ammunition, whether or not a round is in the chamber.
(3) "Secure" means to take steps that a reasonable person would take to prevent the access to a readily dischargeable firearm by a child, including but not limited to placing a firearm in a locked container or temporarily rendering the firearm inoperable by a trigger lock or other means.
(b) A person commits an offense if a child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm and the person with criminal negligence:
(1) failed to secure the firearm; or
(2) left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access.
(c) It is an affirmative defense to prosecution under this section that the child's access to the firearm:
(1) was supervised by a person older than 18 years of age and was for hunting, sporting, or other lawful purposes;
(2) consisted of lawful defense by the child of people or property;
(3) was gained by entering property in violation of this code; or
(4) occurred during a time when the actor was engaged in an agricultural enterprise.
(d) Except as provided by Subsection (e), an offense under this section is a Class C misdemeanor.
(e) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor if the child discharges the firearm and causes death or serious bodily injury to himself or another person.
(f) A peace officer or other person may not arrest the actor before the seventh day after the date on which the offense is committed if:
(1) the actor is a member of the family, as defined by Section 71.003, Family Code, of the child who discharged the firearm; and
(2) the child in discharging the firearm caused the death of or serious injury to the child.
(g) A dealer of firearms shall post in a conspicuous position on the premises where the dealer conducts business a sign that contains the following warning in block letters not less than one inch in height:

"IT IS UNLAWFUL TO STORE, TRANSPORT, OR ABANDON AN UNSECURED
FIREARM IN A PLACE WHERE CHILDREN ARE LIKELY TO BE AND CAN OBTAIN
ACCESS TO THE FIREARM."

Wincheter 94 carbine. Usually have about 100 rounds in the truck at any given time. And about that many pistol rounds. And usually have the 45-70 in there also since I may go up on the mountain anytime, and maybe 75 or 100 rounds for it. And the spare pistol, Smith 24 or 29. and about 100 rounds for it. And the 22,......

And often a bolt gun, and enough rounds to make it worthwhile to get it out and shoot it some when opportunity comes along.

Dust is the biggest problem around here. Rust can happen, from heat/cold cycles and condensation, but I've not had problems with it. I leave my guns pretty dry oil wise. The oil attracts dust. They get dusted off with a GI gun cleaning toothbrush every couple months.

Ive got an old beat up Marlin 336 in .30-30 laying in back of my truck. The magazine is loaded, but nothings in the chamber, and there is an elastic pouch holding 15 additional rounds wrapped around the buttstock. Its like this one, but bigger (and cheaper - I picked it up at K-Mart some time ago (back before the dark days)
