For those that open carry - why?

There are plenty of reasons why one could/should open carry.
-quicker draw and less chance of snag (getting arm caught in shirt, etc.)
-deterrence
-comfort
-let people know about the 2nd amendment

There are also plenty of reasons to carry concealed. Pick your poison. I carry both ways, just depends on my dress, the season, and the circumstances.

Tactically I think we lose the advantage if we open carry. I'm not willing to give up that advantage just to make a political statement.
I don't think that we could know what has the advantage.
As far as stopping a crime, I don't know that CC is any better than OC. OC may prevent the crime from ever happening. I imagine that CC and OC do about an equal job of stopping a crime in progress. You have a little bit of an element of surprise with CC, but with OC, you can draw faster. Likely as not, a BG isn't going to leave his house wanting to get into a gunfight.

What I'm saying is that I believe that whatever tactical advantage CC would be easily sacrificed by me to make a political statement.
However, I'm under 21 and live in Texas.. so I don't have any choice but to do neither.
Which makes me sad.

Because I can.
Because it's more comfortable.
Because I don't have to dress around the gun.
Because I have easier access.
Because I go hiking a lot and it's a real ***** if something is chafing your sides 10 miles over rough terrain.
Because it sends a message that although sterotypes may have a grain a truth, they are not fact.
Because I like to educate.

Wouldn't you be at a disadvantage if people/bad guy/etc knew preemptively that you are carrying?

That would depend.

If you are in a bank that is being robbed by an organized group of well-disciplined professionals, you would probably be a target.

If you are somewhere and a regular street criminal wants to victimize someone, I'm going to guess that he'll wait for you to walk on by, and victimize someone who isn't carrying a gun. Note that your carrying a gun says something about you beyond the simple fact that you are carrying a gun, and what it says is not what a street criminal wants from his victims.

There have been an unusual number of bank robberies and attempts, lately, around here. NONE of them are perpetrated by organized groups of well-disciplined professionals.

I'm going to wildly guess that, for an average civilian, most of the time, OC will scare off more criminals than it will attract.

These strategic considerations are likely to change if you are a cop, if you believe that you might be personally targeted, or if you are in places and situations that are likely to be targeted by professional criminals. I wouldn't OC at, say, the Jewel Mart in Los Angeles, if I had a booth there. I'd CC for sure, though. Same would go for criminal attorneys, and others who might have to worry about professional robbers, crimes of revenge, etc.

Why do I OC (when I do)?

1. I want guns in the hands of law-abiding people to be a familiar sight, not something that the anti's can demonize easily. OC helps promote that. If nobody sees any guns around, it's easy for the Brady Bunch to build associations of guns with crime, instead of lawful self-defense.

2. It's my right, and I'm not hurting anybody by doing it.

3. Some guns are easier to carry openly, and if I'm on the way to someplace in the great outdoors, I often put on a holster when I leave the house, not later. So, if I stop for gas or something, I'm incidentally OC'ing. See #2. I'm not going to shove the gun under the seat and leave it unattended, either.

4. It's kinda fun in some circumstances. The other day, a bunch of us went out to eat at a restaurant that is known to have no problem with OC. We all had guns on.

5. I'd like to get some engraving done to a revolver or two. It'd be a shame to keep a piece of art hidden ALL the time.:)

1. To deter a criminal from picking me as a target.

2. To illustrate to the public that it is perfectly acceptable for an American to have the means at hand to defend themselves, and possibly others.

3. It's just easier.

One more reason...

Some guns are more comfortable to carry OWB. I'll hang a shirt over the holster, sometimes, but if it shows, I don't care.

Is that "semi-OC"?:)

The bears and other varmints don't really care one way or the other if they can see a gun, nor are they impressed. Open is easier to access, and quicker. I cover it if its snowing or raining, but I wouldn't really call it concealed. I usually carry a rifle also. Not really practical to try to conceal a rifle. The rifle gets snowed and rained on. Oh well.

I usually open carry at least one handgun all the time for the simple reason of, why not.

I was in our local Staples store yesterday. They were having some issues at the open register and the second register that a salesperson was going to help me at was blocked so he told me to "come around the back of the register as long as I didn't have a gun."

We both laughed as I pointed to one of my guns and said, you mean one of these?

He hadn't noticed them at all.

I wish we had it in our state. I would OC a lot if I could; mainly because it would be easier/more comfortable to carry a full size pistol.

I would probably OC in certain situations if allowed where I live.

Until it is, I'll just OC when I go visit my brother.

I open carry because concealed carry is not allowed for my age bracket (18-21 yo).

I live in Virginia. It took me a while to warm up to the idea of OC & get used to the fact that it was legal, but after a while is just second nature.

Because I hunt a lot, and there are black bear all over Virginia I always carry a sidearm when I hunt. Basically, being armed in public, during hunting season helped me overcome my anxieties.

Also I have noticed the more I carry (open or concealed) the more I dislike not carrying. Over time my ideas and priorities have changed. Sometimes open carry does not fit well with the circumstance so I purchased an LCP. So basically at a minimum I will have that with me.

There have also been some violent crimes in the last couple of years that have hit close to home for me. The combination of all these events has made me realize the importance of being prepared. Wether it is bears or thugs being prepared is the best thing for my family.

My next priority is to get my better half to the point where she carries her gun on her person rather than in her purse. For some people stuff like this has its natural progression and it has to be worked out on their time.

I will say that paying attention to what goes on in your neighborhood (1-3 miles) will really open your eyes. Have you ever looked up all of the sex offenders in your general vicinity? Do you have a wife, children, valuable assets, carry more than a few hundred bucks cash, or all of the above?

OC, CC, OPP, PPOE... whatever the acronym or buzzword is, if it involves being legally armed, responsible, and prepared DO IT.
