I have a Reminton super mag 870. My ? is can I get a short barrel and tube extension to convert this into a Home Defense shotgun with out any problems?

Thanks for your time.

FYI, i'm not a guru either.....;)

A super mag barrel will shoot 3 1/2's, the mag barrel will shoot 3's. both barrels will shoot 2 3/4's. You can't shoot or insert a 3-1/2 or 3" into a 2-3/4" chamber. Likewise, you can't shoot or insert a 3-1/2" mag into a 3" chamber. The barrel with a 3-1/2" chamber will shoot all three loads.

Whatever is marked on the barrel is what it will shoot and any load up to that size.
If you buy an 870 express and the original barrel says 2-3/4" shells....I would not suggest putting a mag barrel (3 or 3-1/2) on that receiver. It might fit, but the receiver was not meant to take the shock of magnum rounds. Most shotguns will have "magnum" stamped on the receiver (as the 870's do) if it will handle magnum rounds. But others, like my Beretta AL 391 doesn't say mag on the receiver but the original barrel is stamped with 3" magnum. I can shoot 2-3/4" or 3" from my 391 all day long with no issues.

So to answer your question, Yes...you can get a shorter barrel (18" or 20") and mag extension and convert your supermag into a home defense pump.

I hope this helps you some.

No probs, but the "dimples" in the magazine tube will need to be removed (Check archives for methods) before using an extension.

However.....

Contrary to some folks' opinions, a reliable repeating shotgun that only holds 4 or so shells in the magazine is far from useless. In trained, capable hands, one of these may handle any crisis in several lifetimes.

Not everyone handles the extra muzzle weight of an extension well.

In your shoes, I'd....

Get an 870 with a short barrel. Run 1K rounds through it within a few months. Try some skeet, wobble, informal clays, landfill rats or starlings, etc. But shoot it.

Plenty.

At that point, you'll be in a far better place to judge what it needs, if anything.

HTH....

A 3in mag shell will chamber in a 2 3/IN chamber. Bad things can happen if you fire it. I've never tried to put a 3 1/2 inch shell in a 3in chamber so I don't know if it would chamber or not. With the exception of the super mag receiver, all 870 receivers are the same the only thing being different is the ejector.
