In Florida I believe it's law, I know my store ID's for spraypaint, acetone etc. On a lighter note I caught a kid about 10 or 15 years ago stealing glue apparently to huff and when we got him to the back and emptied his pockets and found a bag of weed and a bag of coke but the dumb bas##rd would rather sniff glue

Does it contain acetone? Acetone is one of the new items marked for control due to meth production

Some states now require ID to buy products containing acetone. Some companies which have stores in those states will make it company policy in order to just make it easier for training and software purposes.

Kroger has a requirement if you are buying gift cards $100 or more that they need to key in your drivers license information.

Probably money laundering prevention. Federal law mandates that stores have policies in place to prevent money laundering.

A lot of the stuff people are complaining about in this thread are methods used by stores in order to comply with state and Federal laws.....whine to your representatives.

You were asked to show ID because you were paying with a credit card. You said so yourself when you changed to cash. It had nothing to do with Hoppes 9. YOu could have been buying gym shorts. This is an alarmists thread.

No. The OP said in another post that he switched to cash because he didn't want them to have both his drivers license information and his credit card number. I wouldn't want that either. If I buy any regulated item where the store is required to record my information I pay cash for the same reason.

Oh OK. Sorry about that. I didnt read that far. My bad.

Here in the Republik of IL, I've had to show ID to buy spray paint, arrow field points, decongestants, paint thinner, and a myriad of other things that somehow get misused by someone somewhere. Pain in the butt but what can you really do? Raise hell and get put on another watch list?

It is Federal law that one must present ID in order to buy anything containing pseudophedrine. It is also federal law that it may only be sold from behind the counter...either in the pharmacy or from a locked cabinet. Since it also requires logging the person's ID and amount they bought, it is usually kept and sold from the pharmacy counter.

I always get asked for my zip code or email address when purchasing things at a plethora of stores now, I just tell them that they dont need it. I was asked my zip, my address, and my phone number last time I bought jeans. I guess marketing is taking over where customer service is leaving off. As far as showing id for something thats not regulated....I dont blame you for being weirded out.

It's like the barcode scanning on licenses, I avoid places that do that, there is a lot more information tied to your DL then what is printed on the front.

I pay with cash wherever I can. Also I have the local PD's address and phone number with my name (Joe Smith;)) for use in their info grabbing system. As for a small fish in a big pond so was Rosa Parks.:D

yep , they make meth from Sudafed.

ZIP code; OK. It's not very specific. Phone #? 'No, thanks'. No problem.
My understanding is that it's for marketing research purposes.

ID for credit/debit card? No problem, I WANT to make sure the one using my card is ME! When my ID is checked, I thank the cashier! In fact, I have 'Check ID' written on every card.

Huffing Hoppes #9?? ... especially the Semi Automatic cleaner, with it's healthy dose of naptha .... The first time I opened the bottle I thought I was going to pass out! I quickly moved the cleaning operation to outside!

Looks like we've gone far afield.

As for ZIP codes and phone numbers, I just make stuff up. 1600 Pennsylvania AVE. NW Washington DC, 20500 works too. ;)
