Forced to vote Democratic against my will, Hilary and Obama only ones left? scary

I am registered Independent since I don't like this two party stuff. I think I will vote Republican this year, but unfortunately, the Utah primaries only allows Independents to vote in the Democratic primaries, not Republican. Now that John Edwards is out, who am I going to vote for who's Democrat, Hilary or Obama? My two most important issues this year are ensuring that we have "shall issue" and less restrictions on where we can carry concealed (this post office restriction is annoying and useless), and also to allow "law abiding civilians" to own military-style semi-auto's (like AK-47s) and also machine guns if they desire. Looking at Hilary's and Obama's stance on firearms, they both don't sound too friendly towards military-style semi-automatics. I'm wondering if Hilary would be the lesser of the two evils, because Obama wants a national ban on concealed carry. Would everyone agree, or is there something about Hilary that I don't know about that I should be aware of that would make her even more of a threat to these two issues that I care about? I'm planning on voting Republican in the actual presidential elections, but feel that I should vote in the primaries also because it's everyone's duty to vote as much as possible. I'm not going to vote a certain way just because someone says so, just looking for input so that I can make an informed decision in the Utah primaries that are coming up soon.

What about voting for the Dem. you think will be most easily defeated by the Rep. candidate instead of the one that will be the "less evil" as president?

That would be some activism; get behind the Dem. candidate most likely to fail against a Rep. then convince the rest of the Dems to vote for them.

California has a closed primary.

I re-registered as a Republican so I can vote in it. Unfortunately, it looks like a choice between McCain vs. Romney, so I'm not sure whether I much care. Maybe I'll change my mind within a week.

There's nothing magical about registering "Independent" in a closed-primary state, other than that you don't get to vote in some elections. Doesn't make much sense to me to register "Independent".

At 41 I've lived through at least 3 of each of these things and holy spit, I'm still here!

Sure cornman, many of us, like me, do not believe in "Global Warming" in the sense that it is human caused, support the war efforts and feel that we should be there, and am much more afraid of socialism than of what the right-wing leaders have been doing.

More so I think, I use a candidates 2A stance as a litmus test for freedom in general.
