I purchased a Remington 870 XCS Marine Magnum with the matte black TriNyte coating less than a month ago and am worried about the action of the stock forend will mar or possibly wear through anti-corrosive coating. I put 70-80 rounds through it the other day and noticed long scratches matching movement of forend. Had couple of people familiar with pump actions say this was common. Saw marks after messing with snap caps day one, but they wiped off following disassembly/reassembly easily. Wanted Marine coating for S. Florida saltwater boating trips to Keys/Bahamas when it may not be cleaned for a week or more. Concerned wear marks, if normal will predispose finish to rusting. Any thoughts?

its going to happen no matter what. pump shotguns arent supposed to be pretty and if they are chances are their owner doesnt know how to use it. its gonna happen regardless. it may predispose it to rust if the wear marks are deep enough but it wont be a big deal if you wipe it with a rag and some oil occasionally. and it'll only be on those wear marks, if at all.

That's why stainless and/or chrome is popular for marine finishes. Don't rub off. If you are talking about the coating on the action bars, I can assure you it is going to wear off and the steel underneath will rust if exposed to salt water unless it is stainless.

Older shotguns typically wore ALL the finish off the magazine tube.

Remington put tiny "wear pads" inside the fore-end action bar tube assembly so that it only wears narrow, long marks in the magazine tube.
If you disassemble the action bars from the gun and look inside the tube you'll see these small round pads that are pressed into the tube.

When the fore-end slides on the magazine tube, it's GOING to wear the finish, and there's nothing that can be done about it. Remington put the tiny pads in the action bar tube to limit the wear as much as possible.

The wear marks are in distinct locations so I believe statement about pads. Underneath the black anti-corrosive finish is supposedly the electroless nickel. Went with Remi over Mossy due to fact that the 870 MM has coatings throughout receiver and action in addition to barrel, magazine tube, etc.
It came stock with Remington's tactical forend, and when I looked at a few used 870 tacticals at Gander and Chucks in Jupiter they were absent of marks. Hopefully those were just reparkerized????
I'll keep it lubed well and treat it better than Remington had planned when they developed Marine Magnum.
