I found some forming dies for my 1903 6.5x54MS. They are marked step 1 & step 2. How do I use them and what is the parent case? I believe they are Lee brand.

Thanks,
Mick

Please don't take this for gospel, but I did a little research and found a comment that 6.5x54MS brass can be formed from 8x57 brass. I have never tried this nor have talked to anyone who has done it. I'm just passing what information I found along to you. I'm also assuming that RCBS made your reforming dies, since I don't believe Lee ever made any types of reforming dies. Good luck ;)

I don't know what to tell you.

The 6.5x54MS has a smaller case head then any commonly availble American brass.

It measures .453", as opposed to the more common 8mm/30-06 standard of .473".

The closest I can come up with is either 6.5mm or 7.35mm Carcano brass.

But it is just as hard to find and expensive as what you are trying to make out of it.

Mick, not sure if this has much relevance to the use of your dies, 20thou is a big swage down in head size & I don't even know if it would be possible. Norma lists the 6.5 Carcano case which should resize OK, they may be a couple of thou undersize & it would pay to neck them up to a bigger size (maybe 8mm) & then neck them down to 6.5 again as the Carcano cases are shorter to the shoulder than the MS cases & would have excessive head space. Just neck them enough to be a tight fit in your chamber before fireforming. If you know somwone who can do some machining for not a lot, an alternative might be to turn the rim off 303 cases, turning a new extractor groove at the same time, & then use your form dies. 303 cases are lightly big at the base, .460" as against .452 for the MS case but this is in a range which should reform & some brands may even be closer than that. Being in Aus this might be a simpler route to take but I'd go with Carcano cases if I could get them. A good website for dimensions is http://stevespages.com/page8d.htm Not me though.:)
