Fort Worth, TX Police plan to purchase 200 AR15's

I saw this blurb on Fox 4 Dallas website. I have had nothing but positive interactions with Fort Worth PD and I am glad to see that they are finally getting some new hardware. BUT, do they have to keep using the stereotypical term "assault" rifles? :banghead:

FORT WORTH: POLICE PLAN TO PURCHASE NEW RIFLES

(FORT WORTH, March 18) -- Fort Worth police are testing some new, more powerful weapons. The department purchased AR-15 rifles to make sure officers are not outgunned by criminals. The assault rifles provide a more accurate shot, and fire longer distances than weapons they now carry. Officers with the gang and critical response unit will the the first ones to get training. Eventually, some 200 officers will carry the AR-15s. The department plans to purchase 200 AR-15s. They will be paid for by the recently-renewed crime control and prevention district tax.

I think that people honestly think that AR stands for assault rifle.

Plano police recently decided to buy some ARs as well. It seems they were outgunned by some criminals with an SKS and couldn't shoot back because of the possibility of hitting bystanders. Now with ARs they can hold their fire at a much higher rate.

Good for them, Police officers and their administrators should be well aware that play time is over.
It's a whole new field of bad guys in the realm of law enforcement.

Good for them. I know my local PD bought ARs a few years ago. I see them out at the range from time to time. They are pretty good with those things.

A private individual here in Tulsa recently ponied up the entire purchase price for 100 AR-15s (RRA, if I recall correctly) for the Tulsa PD. The officers are now in the process of qualifying with the rifles, and having them assigned for field use.

They should call them patrol rifles since the officers will be carrying in the field. I don't consider firearms I shoot weapons, I consider them sporting arms wether it's a bolt-action or AR-15 rifle

After all, we all know with "assualt weapons" nobody can hold their fire. As soon as you pick it up, you must instantly place it on your hip and spray a deadly hail of bullets into the nearest group of bystanders.

Ya know, they may really be Assault Rifles.

I know our Dept. issued guns ( they are AR's and a few old mini-14's) have selector switches, making them, technically, assault rifles. The quote does not indicate this, but knowing how accurate and informed reporters are, I am going to give the writer the benefit of the doubt.

If you remember , it was the loan of 5 AR15's to the LAPD by a local Gun Dealer during the Hollywood Shootout with the guys with AK-47's, That bailed the LAPD out of a big problem. Good show Fort Worth.
