Firearms teacher shot at sheriff's target range

By JOHN McDONALD The Orange County Register

ORANGE – A civilian firearms instructor at the Orange County Sheriff Department's Katella Training Facility accidentally shot a colleague in the leg Thursday, officials said.

The accident occurred at the firing range in the 1800 block of Katella Avenue at about 12:15 p.m., sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.

The 41-year-old instructor, with eight years working as a department firearms instructor and weapons technician, was conducting an annual safety inspection on a deputy's off-duty .22-caliber automatic pistol when it accidentally discharged.

Deputies submit their service pistols and off-duty weapons for an annual inspection, Amormino said.

The bullet hit a nearby instructor, a 57-year-old man with three years in the department.

The bullet went through his right leg, near the knee. He was taken to UCI Medical Center but was not believed to be seriously injured, Amormino said.

The shooting will be investigated to determine whether any safety rules or regulations were violated.

Well, lessee here...

  1. Always loaded? Ooops. Looks like he blew that one.
  2. Something about the muzzle pointing only at things you are willing to destroy? Hmmm. Mebbe missed that one, too.
  3. Finger off the trigger until your sights are on target? Uh, I suspect there was something amiss here.
  4. And I guess we all HOPE he wasn't really sure of his target! :what:
  5. And let's not forget the major "This is a free country, not a police state." violation by the reporter. Cops ARE civilians! :fire:

    [/list=1]

RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY

RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

:D

Personally i wanna see the findings of the investigation before i make judgement on "which and how many" rules this guy broke.

could be the cop's BUG was "of unsafe condition" and dischraged when it should not have. then again and mroe likely the instructor in question could have become complacent and.....

IF as is likely he screwed up, he's gone from that job. AND we have another brick in the "all guns are bad NO-ONE should have them" wall.

on he other hand if it turns out to me a technical failure of the firearm, what you wanna bet this guy is gonna go ream the LEO it belonged to a MULTITUDE of new orifices. and he'll be even MORE anal about safety to prevent a repeat.

regadless, rules were broken, then again "Sh!# happens", thus why we HAVE those rules.

Well..

muzzle dicipline... that was what came to mind...

<sigh>

I wish some of the LEO's teachers would learn how to handle firearms...

gun accident

Thats why one of the most feared words in the English language is OOPS.I thought the first lesson was remove magazine or open cylinder clear weapon but still treat it as loaded

Police Officer: Hey Bob, I need you to inspect my guns for the yearly inspection crap.
Instructor: Ok...lets see 'em.
PO: (Hands him a Glock and a .22)
I: (Looks at Glock, that checks out ok. Then grabs the .22) Boy Chuck you need to get a real gun, not one of these little pea shooters, this won't stop a bad guy if shot him in the fa****BOOM****

Well, anyone else here think it is weird that his off-duty gun was a .22 ? Not so much the caliber, but that it is a rimfire. Stupid is as stupid does...

Well regardless of whether or not the firearm malfunctioned causing the discharge, he obviously didn't have it pointed in a safe direction.

If all 4 rules are followed, nobody gets hurt..

If he doesn't know that, he shouldn't be an instructor..

Regardless if there's an AD... If the muzzle was pointing at the ground, you'd have a hole in the ground, not in the leg..

It's things like this that so irritates me..

To quote Forest Gump..

Stupid is as Stupid does..
