An Orange County deputy sheriff accidentally shot himself and a bystander Friday while handling a pistol at the Lawson Lamar Firearms and Tactical Training Center off Weewahootee Road. Deputy Brian Gabutti, who was working as a safety officer at the firing range in east Orange County on Friday, accidentally pulled the trigger of the Glock model 21 .45-caliber firearm, Deputy Carlos Torres said.

The bullet pierced through Gabutti's hand, then struck the leg of Jason Lockwood, 24, the son of sheriff's Sgt. Larry Lockwood. Lockwood had brought his son to the range while the sergeant obtained proficiency qualification for one of his firearms. Gabutti and Jason Lockwood were airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Because the shooting was unintentional, Gabutti will return to work, officials said.

At least they admitted that the deputy actually pulled the trigger, and the gun didn't just "go off".

No offense to the LEOs, but it's a relief that this was at police training center (all things considered). If it had been at a private club, the media would be screaming to shut it down.

I'm glad the injuries are all non-life threatening.

The way I read it both of them got air lifted to the hospital.

Question:::::If the RSO had been a non-LEO type person, would they be ready to prefer charges against him?

A hunting buddy of mines dad, shot himself in the hand while in the Air Force. He was showing how a 1911 when pushed by the barrel and slide, go out of battery and will not fire. The pistol had a round in the chamber, needless to say, it went off and blew a 45 caliber hole in his palm.

To this day, he won't touch a 1911, he says the guns are inherently unsafe???

Unfortunately for him, he was playing baseball for the Air Force at the time, and was booted from the team for his act of stupidity.

From them on, whenever we went hunting, and his dad would go, I would pack my 1911, as my sidearm.

Jim,
Guess my sentence was kinda misleading. I meant that an LEO gets the chopper ride (and in this case, the other LEO's son, too.)
Others get ambulance service for non-life threatening injuries.

I'm not anti-LEO; I'm just throwing a topic on the table.

You are "half right". The other half is that Glock triggers apparently are a lot easier to pull?

Glock NDs are a symptom, not a disease. It's a symptom that manifests whenever an idiot is combined with a firearm that lacks a manual safety. That happens to be glocks most of the time, glocks being the most commonly handled manual-safety-lacking handguns. The disease is still the idiot behind the trigger.

Note: this does not in any way label those with pre-upgrade slam-firing glunks as "idiots."

Many 1911s are lighter.

A stock Glock has an 8 lb pull. With a "light" 3.5 connector, it's 5 lbs. My Kimber is 3 lbs - stock.

Glocks have a shorter trigger stroke than most "double-action" pistol, but then again it's longer than my Kimber.

Bad habits are bad habits and the occasional "oh sh**!" just happens.

Before I even read the article I thought "hmmm...bet it was a cop".

Hate it when I'm right.

Many cops seem to think that toting a handgun 8 hours a day makes them an expert. Sigh.
