hello, this is my first post. thanks for having me. i'm a big fan of ruger revolvers, own a blackhawk 357 6.5 barrel and gp100. just bought SBH 44 magnum. my question is i noticed it as well as the last blackhawk i purchased had fouling on cylinder face. i know they test fire guns, but why do some guns show absolutely no fouling on cylinder while others do. more currious than anything. (these guns have been bought at repitable dealers) thanks for any advice!

I just bought a S&W 38+P and it had all the rings on the cylinder face "fouled" darkened. I think sometimes they shoot more than one for what ever reason. My 642 had no foul marks at all but you could just see a slight ring around one cylinder face. Sounds typical to have this variety of rings.

My local dealer told me that he takes a minute with #0000 steel wool to clean factory fouling marks off of his display stainless revolvers.

He is an authorized S&W dealer but not a very high volume kind of operation. He said he got tired of answering the question almost every time a customer looks over a gun.

I've noticed that he's been busier in the last few weeks than at any time in the last ten years, so maybe now he doesn't have the time to do his little cleaning anymore. Both he and his wife are looking kinda' stressed these days...:)

i usually don`t clean my cyl. down to the metal but once a year to do measuring .
i`m with the school that too much scrubbing on the end of the cyl will round the end of the throats .

I've used this ...

... or its Birchwood Casey equivalent, to clean burn rings off.

for me... as long as the cylinder can still spin freely, i don't touch it. I'm afraid too much rubbing even with a super soft cloth will slowly increase the cylinder-barrel gap..

+1 for the Lead Away cloth, or similar products. I use one on my stainless Ruger SRH and it works great.

its all about powders. some foul...some dont so much. best way to fully clean face fouling that i have found:

remove cylinder from revolver and do one of two things. 1. soak in solvent and scrub down with bronze brush. 2. ultrasonicc clean

or....dont worry...wont hurt anything if you just basic clean
