Snagged this today for the kingly sum of $200-

Marlin M989 M2.
Made from the mid-60s through late 70s and based on the M70 action, the 989 and its tube-fed sibling the 99 M1 were meant to mimic the general style of the M1 Carbine in an inexpensive .22 package.

The 989 is much more Carbine-esque thanks to being box-fed, though Marlin could have put a little more effort into the stock profile and parts-bin ramped front sight to complete the facade.
Another nice thing about the box-magazine guns is they avoid the loose two-peice feed ramp problems which plague the old tube-fed Marlins.

At least Marlin did supply a nifty, fully adjustable rear sight kinda, sorta similiar to the post-war Carbine unit- though without an actual peep aperture! These rear sights are often missing as they were commonly removed for scope mounting and subsequently lost over the years. Fortunately, this gun retained the rear sight, and even came with an extra 7-round magazine.:)
The single-rivet upper handguard and barrel band are very close to those found on early-production M1 Carbines.
My example is in nice shooter-grade condition and I was able to put a few down the pipe this afternoon-

I did have some failures to eject- the gun looks like it hasn't been cleaned or lubed in decades, so hopefully that will help with functionality. Cant complain about the accuracy, though-

If you didn't catch the reference, "War Baby" evokes the excellent, definitive M1 Carbine books "War Baby" and "War Baby Comes Home" by Larry Ruth.

Ive seen (and passed on) tons of 99 M1s through the years, but the 989 seems to be a little less common and though I certainly don't NEED any more .22s, I couldn't resist this handy plinker with a touch of milsurp style. :)

My first rifle when I was 7. Dad cut the stock off 2” and glued on a leather butt plate to fit me. When I turned 14, I cut the leather butt plate off and screwed/glued the 2” back on. I shot my first grouse with it at 8 years old and a ton of rabbits and grouse until my son was born.

When my son was 8, I cut the 2” off the stock again. He shot many grouse and rabbits with it. When he was 14, we glued the 2” back on.

When his son/daughter is 8, I’m sure we will do the same, LOL.

The gun has probably 20,000 rounds thru it. Original barrel, but the action (slide, springs, rebound plastic, etc) has been replaced once.

Don't see many mag feed ones much anymore, think just about every shop here has one of the tube m99s. Sight is worth more then the gun. Very fun guns tho and they can shoot. Order a buffer.

Yup, a new buffer is definitely on my list!

I dont think the round count is very high on this one- the recoil spring seems pretty stout yet. Parts availability should be fairly good since this action is still used by the Papoose.

Nice find, I don't need any more guns but I'd certainly be tempted at that price.

Surprised Marlin didn't cut the rear of the stock for an "oiler", would have given it more of a Carbine flavor. Same for eliminating the raised comb.

There are 25 round mags I use in my Papoose that would give it the 30 round Carbine "banana mag" look. Surprisingly, they work well.

Good luck with your new gun!

A lot of folks lose the adjustable rear sight after mounting a scope on their Marlin .22 M1 and M2.

I have seen the Marlin ".22 carbine" sights advertised at $80 to $200 aimed at collectors obsessed with restoring their Marlin .22 M1 or M2 missing the rear sight.

OP paid $200 for a complete Marlin 989 M2 with sight and magazine and all in presentable condition. Color me green from envy. Very good find!

One of those 25-round Promags is on my list. :)
My experience with my daughters M70 is that the factory 7-rounders work great, but the new stainless 10-shot boxes only feed decently if downloaded to 7-8 rounds, are stamped from thinner steel and seem kinda flimsy. :barf:

A lot of the 99M1 and 989 M2 rifles are missing the original rear sight and collectors want the original sight. I have seen the OEM rear sight for these go as high as $150. I got a steal on my 99M1 10 years ago. Neighbor needed to borrow $60 and gave me the rifle as collateral and he never came back for the rifle.

Here is my 99M1 for comparison to the 989 M2

The 99M1 was my first rifle - my dad had lost the rear sight sometime in the late 1970’s, so I learned to shoot it just by the front sight. Eventually, the front sight also fell off, which spurred me to buy a new rear sight for it… which I never actually put back on, nor the front sight… I also eventually FORGOT I had bought the replacement rear sight, and bought a second one - so now I have two… and neither is on the rifle. I still shoot it quite a bit, it’s my favorite bunny and squirrel hunting rifle each spring.

Mine’s pretty rough - it shows its miles. But it still shoots reliably and accurately.

I'll have to check with my buddy and see if he still has the one I sold him a few years back. I was thinking it had a detachable mag, but I may be mis-remembering. I bought it because it was a bit different, and at $85 I took a chance. At the time, the BB of Gun Values only had it at around $100, so when my buddy offered that amount, I let him have it.

I have one of those! My father bought it for me when I was 14 years old and still have it. Bought a few parts for it 3 years ago because of an ejection problem and it runs like a top now. It is a bit picky with the type of ammo.
