Found a gas operated 870! Anyone heard of these?

A friend of mine recommended a gun shop an hour away from me, so I decided to call first and ask what they had in potential trap guns for sale. The guy apologized that he only had one candidate in stock. He said it was a single shot gas operated Remington 870! The details on the gun was that it was a trap version of the 870 pump. There is no magazine therfore a single shot weapon. It has a 30" full choke barrel. The gas operation was explained as a spring loaded gas assisted cylinder in the receiver that absorbs a portion of the recoil. Shell ejection is via the left hand as with any pump. Asking price was $469 which I thought was little high.

Anyone out there ever have one of these and/or have any knowledge of this shotgun?

Only made for a few years about 15 (20?) years ago. Nice concept, didn't catch on. Browning flew a few similar models out about the same time.

Trap gunners are quick to jump on fads sometimes!

It was called the 870 Competition. Single shot, manual operation, but gas was vented from the barrel into a piston setup that delayed a portion of recoil energy the same as a gas auto.

Worked fine, sold not so fine.

$469 not out of line IF condition warrants.

Yep, it's a Model 870C trap gun. The piston is to soften the recoil.

yup, great gun

my club has on for the club gun. It reduces recoil almost as well as my dads 1100 classic trap, and kills clays. nice wood, but not the recessed checkering that most old 870s have. it has a strait trap stock and the forearm reaches all of the way back to the receiver when the action is closed. they were made for one year, '86. i woul probably consider it one step up from any 870 trap gun i have ever shot (including mine )but one step down from the 1100 trap. it has bluing on the sides of the receiver, and appears to have a rough (not parkerized, maybe bead blasted )finnish on the upper part of the receiver. It would definately be worth every penny of the 469 dollars to me, but i still wouldnt get one because i would probably have great trouble finding parts for it. good luck

In the real world not the bluebook world they sell around 5-650 depending on the wood quality. Nice shooting trap gun.

I've shot one. They're a great trap gun, especially for long-range games. I don't think there's much that absorbs recoil like an 870 Competition.

It should say "Competition" on the side, AFAIK.
