I dropped in on my local dealer for coffee and breeze-batting, as I often do. He dug out an old Colt revolver to show me, and for the collectors among us, I thought you might like to know about it.

It looks to be a very early Police Positive Special - if the model is right, the serial number dates it to 1918. Someone cut the barrel back to 1¾", even shorter than the standard 2" Detective Special barrels, and re-mounted the front sight. It's in caliber .38 Colt - the short round, I think - and nickel-plated. It apparently belonged to someone's grandfather or great-grandfather who was on a police force in Texas, and used it as his backup gun through the Roaring Twenties.

It's now up for sale for only $125, complete with an old holster. I'm not going to buy it, but if anyone's interested in a piece of history, this might be something to consider. Contact me via PM if you'd like to know more.

I suspect what you're looking at is a Police Positive rather then a Police Positive Special. the Police Positive is identical to the Detective Special you recently posted a thread on, but has a shorter cylinder and frame. It would be chambered in .38 CNP (Colt New Police) which is the same as .38 S&W. If it is a Police Positive you'd have to check the serial number again because it would be numbered in a different series. The original grips were black hard-rubber similar to the replacements I think you purchased for your Det. Spec.

If it is in good mechanical shape the gun, with that background, would be a super buy. If it wasn't getting it into good working order might be expensive. I don't think the dealer will have it very long.

Yup ....

When I posted my first message I decided I should give some other members a chance to get what I suspect is a real good one. I don't know who will win this race, but whoever does I expect a full description and maybe some pics.

I found an interesting Colt snubbie too. It was a Colt New Service M1909. It is a British 455 chambering. The barrel was cut to 1 and 1/2", no front sight and the ejection rod hed was removed even with the barrel. ELEY is left on te barrel. It is covered with the usual crown and BNP stampings. It seems BIG for a pocket or BUG.
