I went to a gun auction and found some interesting pieces that just had to come home with me. Here is a Winchester 1873 that was made in 1882, chambered in 44-40. I ordered some black powder cartridges and took it to the range to make sure it went bang, only put 5 rounds through it and it functioned perfectly, was a joy to shoot...

Friend of mine had one that shot modern smokeless 44-40 loads. He could cut corn stalks down at 100 yards.
