Why?
The Smith breechloader used rubber cartridges.
Modern shooting replacements are molded out of plastic.
They hold only powder and bullet, a percussion cap is applied to the nipple just like a muzzleloader.

Thanks for posting that photo, it brings back fond memories of when I started shooting competition. Originals were fairly common on the lines as they were fairly inexpensive.
