I have owned 3 different rifles chambered for 556/223, the last one being a Mossberg MVP. I can't really explain why but I felt no joy shooting any of them. I finally rid myself of everything 556 and vowed never again.

Well, yesterday I stopped in to a LGS and handled a gunsite scout chambered for my arch enemy, the 556. It was gunlust at first sight.

So, I mulled it overnight and did the deed today. Went straight to the range and camped out on the 50 yard with the stock iron sights. I actually enjoyed the challenge, the caliber and the gun. Immensely.

It feels a bit like I remarried my ex, LOL, but I think this one's a keeper.

What were the other two rifles? ARs?

Congrats on the new rifle. There is something very appealing about shooting a GSR to some people (me included). I can imagine how nice the relative lack of recoil would be in the 5.56 model.

First was a gunsmith-built AR15, second was a Primary Weapon System piston AR15.

I can't really explain why I didn't like the combination of the platform and the caliber, especially since I have AR15s now in 300 BLK, 5.7x28 and 9mm which I thoroughly enjoy shooting. It's possible that the subsequent addition of suppressors to the toy box made the difference, I shoot both the 300 BLK and 5.7 suppressed. The 9mm is a Rock River AR pistol and is just plain fun.

I will install my 30 cal suppressor on the Gunsite and try it out, albeit sub-caliber. Who knows, if I like it I may revisit an AR15 upper in 5.56. The ammo is sure cheap compared to the others I presently shoot.

Sharing a brief range report, I like it!

I got the Ruger Gunsite rigged with an XS rail and a spare scope to the range today. Being hunting season, the lanes were pretty busy so I landed on a 50 yard bench and got to work. I'd already installed a flash hider suppressor mount for my 30 cal YHM Phantom and did all my shooting suppressed.

First off, the suppressor did a remarkable job of quieting the rifle, it truly sounded no louder than a 22 rifle. I'm not sure what the predicted decibel gain for using a sub-caliber suppressor is, but this combination was eerily quiet.

Anyway, I proceeded to sight in using 55 grain factory reloads from Freedom Munitions. I felt pretty good about it, but not that great. The target below is pretty small in size so I'd go with a 2" to 2.5" group. I shot a bunch of these, they all held pretty much the same.

Next I dug out the last 6 rounds I had from a box of Federal 50 gr varmint, this is what my LGS said might just work for this rifle. Needless to say, the group tightened quite a bit. I was pretty happy at this point and called it a day.

My takeaway is the rifle can shoot well, but it prefers to dine at more tony establishments. I can live with that, even expensive .556 is still way cheaper than expensive 7.62. It's a keeper :)

I've shot a few hundred rounds of that same Freedom ammo. While its reliable, and clean, it lacks in accuracy. My results were similar to yours.

I'm glad you like it

I like mine in 308 quite a bit. Mine shoots around an inch at 100 with decent ammo. I have not tried many hand-loads so there is probaly room for improvement. It is a rifle that I don't really need but I realldon't want to sell it either.
