I ran across a Mossberg MVP Scout the other day that sure looked sweet. But the Ruger M-77 Gunsite Scout in black synthetic really does it for me as well. What are ya'lls thoughts, on which way I should go.

Can't compare it to the Mossberg but I certainly like my GSR. Get the Ruger and shoot it - you can always sell it and turn it into a Mossberg if you don't like it.

I wouldn't be terribly interested in either, but would much rather have the Ruger.

Have been using the Ruger GSR for some time now, like it enough to now own three. Took one to Gunsite for the class, learned a whole lot. Have had very successful hunting with them as well. I prefer the Alpha magazines, and use Leupold 1.5-5 VXR IER optics.
The rifles have proven to be very durable, accurate, and reliable. For use on the ranch, rough service getting in and out of jeeps, and occasionally in horse scabbards and wet weather, they have excelled.
Yes, they cost more than some others, but to my experience you have to spend some money to get something that will last.

I just ordered the MVP Patrol the other day. Won't have it until end of this week. It just seemed to have a lot going for it: adjustable trigger, rail, fiber optic front sight if needed, takes AR-15 mags and is a handy size.

I don't doubt that the Ruger is a better quality rifle but for as often as I'll use this thing it was just not worth the extra money. I don't hunt; it's just going to be a fun gun for me. I'm getting it with the scope for $695. That's about the most I wanted to spend.

Good luck with your decision.

I was in a local gun range/gun store last week that had 6 MVP patrols, some with glass and some without. Prices were in the low to high $500s for the MVP Patrols. They also had one solitary GSR at about $750.00.

I still haven't seen a poly stocked GSR in the "wild".

I missed the part about the MVP being a Scout! What was the asking price? Was it 5.56 or 7.62?

I have a laminate Ruger GSR and think the poly stock would be nice in offsetting the weight of optics.

As I said, I'm paying $695 for the Patrol with scope. The rifle without scope would have been $550. Which I guess isn't bad based on what you're seeing. I'm in Maryland and nothing is cheap here.

You can't go wrong with either one. I like the GSR a bit better (I own several Rugers and like their quality quite a bit), but it is expensive relative to the Mossy.

I found this photo online of the two side-by-side:
