Would you consider this a smith job or a DIYer?

I've got a 686-1 and the cylinder slides back when I unload. It appears the frame lug is the culprit, being slightly marred/chipped. I've seen the parts online, though they don't look like their the same brushed look as the pistol itself.

It can be a DIY if you understand the correct way to do it and don't mind scrounging the correct tools. Get Kuhnhausen's S&W manual to read up on it. The book is worth having for any S&W revolver owner even if you never intend to do any work on the gun yourself.

If you are impatient and/or unwilling to approach it the right way then send it to a good S&W smith. Get references, look at some work, etc before choosing your smith.

Got a photo of the damage?

Thanks for the book suggestion.

Depending on the cost of any special tools, it may be easier and worth it to just have it done.

I bought one from someone on this board and the lug fell out the first day.

I thought the THR member knowingly sold me a gun with a loose lug! Then I realized that if that tiny lug fell out once, it wasn’t likely getting found to get put back in.

THAT'S A JOB BEST LEFT TO THE FACTORY. THESE ARE PRESS FIT INTO THE FRAME. WHEN ONE FALLS OUT AN OVERSIZE ONE NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED. CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE , THEY'LL SEND YOU A CALL TAG. JP
