So I keep reading everywhere that my Commander-sized 1911 has a "full-sized frame". So my question is, can it use the slide assembly from a Government/Mil-spec 1911, or only other Commander slides?

you should be able to but there may be slight dimensional differences that could cause the parts not to mate well together...but a Commander is a Government Model with a shorter slide and barrel (and associated parts of course)

A real COLT Commander receiver has a shorter dust cover and a more rearward placement of the recoil abutment than a COLT Government Model. If you put a G.M. upper on a Comm. lower, the first would leave an ugly gap with recoil spring showing, the second might affect function.

"Full sized" refers to the butt length and use of a standard 1911 magazine in Commanders.

I don't know about the various clones and mutants, the makers take different approaches.

You ought to be able to arrange a trade, the Internet is full of people talking about putting Commander slides on Government recievers. Which sometimes works and sometimes not.
