Most people suggest a 12ga. shotgun (which I have) or a .45acp (which I also have) for home defense because .357mag, .38sp, and 9mm have "over penentration"

What are your thoughts on 9mm+P frangible rounds? Are they good for "stopping power" without excessive penetration?

Hollowpoints.

Ball ammo out of any handgun has the possibility to fully penetrate the bad guy and keep on going. With hollowpoints, that possibility is significantly reduced, and, no matter where your tent is located in the "what makes a bullet most terminally effective" camp, it can generally be agreed on that having small metallic objects whizzing out of a bad guy at high rates of speed is A Bad Thing safety-wise (excluding the aforementioned bad guy).

NOT designed for SD !! Use Corbon's Glaser ammo if you don't want overpenetration. ...In court it's far easier to defend a bullet that goes through a BG and into a bystander, than to defend a bullet that misses a BG and hits a bystander !!!

Any of the other calibers you mentioned won't overpenetrate with premium hollowpoints. If anything, it's kind of hard to get enough penetration while getting good expansion. Frangibles tend to make nasty, but shallow wounds that have the exact opposite problem-lack of penetration. It's not the impact that takes a perp down, it's the tissue damage done to vital organs. A bullet needs to get in deep enough to do that. I'd suggest finding the gun and cartridge you shoot best with, then load it with premium hollowpoints and don't worry about it.

OK - Sarah - Now for the Home Invation

As the brits are dicovering after having to melt down their guns, the only folks who have guns are the bad guys, and now the Bobbies are carrying!

So now, all of a sudden, home invasions are on the rise in the UK. Too bad they have not heard how concealed carry laws reduce crime in places where they have passed. See http://www.johnrlott.com/

This about Lott from Michelle Malkin:
Armed with top-notch credentials (including stints at Stanford, Rice, UCLA, Wharton, Cornell, the University of Chicago and Yale), Lott took on the entrenched anti-gun bias of the ivory tower with seemingly meticulous scholarship. His best-selling 1998 book, "More Guns, Less Crime," provided analysis of FBI crime data that showed a groundbreaking correlation between concealed-weapons laws and reduced violent crime rates.

Or Stanford Law Review, see: http://johnrlott.tripod.com/Plassmann_Whitley.pdf
Robbery rates in right-tocarry
states were rising until the laws were passed and then fell continually
after that point. The pattern is very similar to that shown earlier by Lott in
examining county-level data from 1977 to 1996

This research makes the libs go nuts. It shows that criminals are basically cowards and are simply less likely to rob, shoot, rape if they think you or your daughter is carrying. And therefore they ignore it and drive on in search of their utopia where only the libs and the cops have guns.

Very true. It is the round to use if you're worried about overpenetration. As luck would have it, you don't have to worry about any penetration either.

If you're worried about over penetration in BG's then a good hollow point is your best bet.

If you're worried about over penetration in wallboard you need to either make sure that there's no one on the other side of the walls or be damn sure you don't miss. Anything that can penetrate enough to kill a BG will probably penetrate at least 6 layers of 5/8" wallboard, and probably a lot more unless it hits something solid first. If I remember right a 5.56 penetrates fewer layers of wallboard than most handgun rounds. I'll have to go back to the Box o Truth to refresh my memory.
