Here's my scenario. My father-in-law has a farm w/cattle.

Coyotes are harrassing his calves. Killing some.

The best spot for calling yotes is surrounded on two sides by old, paved, not much used, country road. But, there is some occasional traffic.

My yote guns are a 22 Hornet falling block Browning and a S&W M&P heavy barrel 5.56 PC.

Do frangible bullets work in such a situation? Viz. fragment harmlessly if they miss a thin skinned animal?

I've already decided to set my blind pointing away from the road, but I'm just curious re the whole concept behind "frangible."

Yes, they work.

But so will a light 'varmint' bullet driven at high velocity out of your ..223.
40, 45, 50 grain V-Max or Nosler Ballistic-Tip will come apart at the first contact with about anything.

And the .22 Hornet was invented for just such a scenario if New England nearly 100 years ago for hunting ground hogs.

Fast & light varmint bullets will either blow up inside the game.

Or blow up when they hit the ground if you miss.

Just don't shoot towards the cows or the road and you will be fine.
