Fraud look out selling 1860 Army

Ok lets get the word out and out quick. We need to post this on all Black Powder forums. Make sure that no one else gets taken by this guy. In short the guy puts out a listing saying he is selling an 1860 Army. Says how his wife posted it for sale he did too and they had sellers one did not pay the other paid but he ended up refunding the money. Thats how it starts. Well he has sold this same gun to over 4 people now. Every one of them sends him money and never sees anything else.

I bought a 1100 remington on the internet that the gentleman has sold 17 times over in a three day time frame. I paid 550.00 for the gun as did 16 other people. It was probably the most a Remington 1100 ever brought on the internet. I think the guy got around 9400.00 for the gun total and 5 years in the joint.

Most likely the 1860 Army (and the Rem 1100 shotgun) never did exist. All just a scam.

If you really want something valuable on an internet auction, consider the Escrow service provided by many auction sites. The scammers will flee when you suggest escrow.

Internet sales

I've bought and sold a numbers of guns over the net. Ninety-Nine percent of the transactions have been above board. Mostly Second and Third Generation C&B Colts (NIB). Most of the sellers have been above board and I have had a couple offer my money back if I was not satisfied. The one transaction that went bad was a #2 S&W - antique, engraved, ivory grips, cherry case, ivory tipped ram-rod, and a box of original cartridges. The gun was advertised as being mint prior to the custom work being done on it and was "as new" in condition. When it came in I noticed the action was stiff, just wasn't right. I sent it to a specialist on vintage S&Ws and was told the sleeve that is threaded and is pressed into the cylinder was broke and binding. The seller refused to do anything about it and accused me of breaking it. Long story - it cost me an additional $500 to have it repaired. The original engraver who was also involved in the restoration told me the gun was broke when he did the initial engraving and that the owner (guy, who sold it to me) knew it was broke and said he wanted it for a show piece. I will probably get my money back out of it - and it will be as close to 100% as possible and accurately listed when it is sold the next time. But, I had to eat the additional cost on the front end. I filed a complaint with the on-line site that the gun was bought through and was told they did not take sides in a transaction. The seller also terminated the listing as expired instead of sold and got out of paying their commission. Along with me, he essentially ripped off the listing site. They obviously do not care since the seller is still listing guns with them.


Internet Sales:

Most are legit - but you can get burned

On most guns it would cost you more to go to another state and pursue any legal recourse than you will gain.

On high dollar guns, use a third party. Have it sent to a reputable source to be checked out. Once you get the OK - then transfer funds. If the seller is not willing to do that, you got a red flag.

I`ve always had good dealings off Gunbroker ..Guns bought were uasually better than pictured for the price ..One thing I do though ..I always check the sellers feed back before I ever bid ..if he has only sold one or two I stay away ..most sellers have plenty of feed back .

Internet Sales

Ditto Gun Broker - it is one of the best - Always had good luck with them

Feedback is a good indicator - although not related to gun sales, and prohibited on their site, I have had vendors provide info for a feedback check off of ebay. You got someone who has a large number of positive scores - that goes a long way.

i have bought 3 revolvers from people on the internet. 2 of them from THR members one on gunbroker. a lot of people do. I would just say that you need to be careful with new members. i have also had a holster made by big bad guns. he does excellent work. its scumbags like this though that we have to watch out for. pretty bad. messes up everything for everyone. i hope they catch this guy and put him where he belongs.

i think it depends on what they are selling new sellers need to sell low priced items and work there way up. no one is going to want to buy a 400 dollar gun from someone with only 2 feed backs. We all need to be cautious on how we controll our money.
