Guns and Grub: Louisiana restaurant serves free fried chicken to concealed carry holders
83
If exercising your constitutional right to bear arms and defending yourself in a crisis weren’t reasons enough to carry a firearm, now one Louisiana restaurant is serving up free fried chicken to concealed carry permit holders.
A chicken restaurant in Bossier City, La., decided to give away free #1 combo meals to concealed carry permit holders on Saturday.
The restaurant, Chicken Express, began the promotion as the Louisiana state legislature considers a series of new gun bills.
Chicken Express owner Randal Neel said the new deal wasn’t just to generate more business — although it certainly didn’t hurt — but to stand up for gun owners’ rights as state legislators discuss an onslaught of proposed gun legislation.
“It feels really good to be able to stand up for what you believe in,” Neel told local ABC-affiliate KLTV.
Concealed permit holders also didn’t seem to mind mixing politics with pleasure. According to Neel, Chicken Express has never seen this many customers. Either a lot of gun owners reside in Bossier City or concealed carry permit holders flocked all the way to Bossier City just to get their grub on while carrying their Glocks.
“Until criminals and crooks know there is someone that can fight back, they can do whatever they want,” concealed permit holder Ronnie Corbi told KLTV.
But it looks like concealed carry holders have little to worry about down in Louisiana.
Unlike many states pushing for more gun restrictions, most of the legislation up for discussion in Louisiana is pro-gun.
In fact, Louisiana passed a statewide amendment back in November in order to block legislation that infringes on citizens’ right to bear arms. The amendment calls gun ownership a “fundamental right” and demands “strict scrutiny” of gun laws.
The few gun control bills currently on the table include banning mentally ill people from owning guns, creating harsher punishments for illegal gun transactions and making it against the law to keep your guns unlocked.
The tragedy here is that Popeye’s isn’t following suit with the free chicken promo. Only in Louisiana would they use fried chicken to make a point — one greasy wing at a time.
