From deep withing the bowels of the top secret Slander Firearms Technology Center (stop in for factory tours, just off I35 in Waco Texas, exit 76)* comes the greatest AKM accessory since grain alcohol...

THE S.P.A.D.E.

or

Special Purpose Attachment Device, Enhanced

CNC Machined from a solid 7075 Aluminum billet, the SPADE is a receiver for the AKM series of rifles, to include AK47 and 74s. The SPADE surpasses all current AK receivers by offering massively increased rigidity and a truly free floated barrel for affordable semi-auto accuracy previously obtainable only in AR15 variant rifles. The lower rail is a direct continuation of the receiver while the upper rail is removable (to allow easy installation and maintenance of the barrel and gas system) and is held on by a total of eight hex screws. When installed the SPADE provides the only free floating rail system for the AK and reaches almost to the end of a standard barrel, allowing for the rifle to be held far forward as modern tactical shooting doctrine recommends.

The SPADE allows for the attachment, without modification, of any standard profile AR15/M16 family pistol grip, as well as an Mil Spec collapsible stock. The stock is raised to the proper height and is inline with the action, which reduces felt recoil and improves point-ability and target acquisition.

A prototype sketch is provided below for your consideration and feedback is requested.

*I don't have a secret technology center... sarcasm.

Why would you free float the AK barrel to begin with? I seriously doubt it would have any significant effect on accuracy. Even if it did the AK accuracy is plenty sufficient for it's realistic range. Really though you can shoot it while using the mag as a mono-pod to get the same effect to test the theory if you wish.

If it's about heat transfer the guards with heat shields work plenty well.
