Free gun inventory software

. . .and probably originates from somewhere ending in .gov.

Mmmmm, Spyware! :neener:

Nahh, I'm sure it's legit. Just some here may be skeptical.

Excel is a good alternative if you already have Office. Also, for PDA users, something like EWallet can also be used to catalog guns as well as a lot of other items. EWallet saved me much time when I lost my physical wallet. Cancelled everything and started the replacement process within 20 minutes of noticing my wallet was missing.

Gun Inventory software

Downloaded it, seems to be a very decent program, especially for the price. If anybody has used it extensively and has comments, I'd love to hear them.

Would rather find out any bugs before I go to the trouble of typing in all of my numbers....

Thanks for the tip-off- I'd been looking for something like this. :D

IT Works

I had to try it. Seems to work nice. It would be nicer if I had some to catalog.
For those that don't use Windows, I have it runing on Linux (under WINE) and it seems to act nice.
Maybe I'll catalog my wish list.

Just installed it with the help of my son. I have now lived long enough to be a problem to him.

I've used it for over a year. Nice program, easy and it's free. No spyware (doesn't even install anything on your computer, it's more like an advanced spreadsheet that unzips itself into a folder).

It's being posted on different boards because it appears to be a good program.

I posted it here two days ago but no one seemed to notice.

The man that created the program is visiting the thread on GT and asking for ideas to improve the program for the next release.

I opened it up last night, just to poke around in it and see how it was laid out. I wasn't quite ready to do any of the data entry or anything. I clicked on the "New Entry" button, and that page opened up right nice. I tried to exit, and couldn't. I tried to go back to the main menu, and couldn't. No matter what I tried to do, it just popped up a dialog box saying "You must enter a serial number". Even "task manager" had a hard time closing it out.

ceetee,

I had a similar problem trying to get out of a screen. If you try to add something, you have to add everything or hit delete. I work with Data Bases all day so it didn't phase me.

The guy seems to be developing a nice tool and needs feedback from the target users. Being a sometimes programmer, I know it's nice to have someone tell you what you've missed. Also, as a "Techie" I can put up with things that others can't. We need complaints and gripes from the users to realize, "Oh. I guess that is annoying. Sorry, I'll fix that."

Once you click on "new entry" you must at least enter a serial number or hit delete record to back out. It seems that the programer made the serial number field required. If you get stuck in a screen enter anything into the serial number field or delete the record and it will let you out.

I looked at the display examples. I prefer Excel. I have all my info right there (along with a picture of the firearm) and don't have to go back and forth between screens.

No go on my MAC

I downloaded it and can't get it to work in any way shape or form on my Mac G-3.

It may be that I just have an old Operating System on it.

IMO, if you want to keep track of guns on a computer, have it be an older laptop that you NEVER EVER connect to the net.

Any program in Windows can phone home, and it takes a microsecond for it to send your entire gun collection's contents to anyone it's meant to.

Macs are more secure, but still.

Hmmmm...what is the best computer for cataloging your collection?

Mac or PC?

Should we start a poll?

Best HD computer?

Best CCW laptop?

Not to get too OT, but any Unix based system is more secure than Windows by default. Windows has way too many documented faults.
WINE is an app that will allow you to run windows programs on a Unix system

This is a nice peice of software,(GunSafe) and the Guy is kind enough to make it free. Very COOL.
I set it up on my Linux system in 5 mins.

Except that any linux system is the equivalent of an unpolished raw-machined parts kit where you have to track down additional parts that fit AND mill some yourself. :)

Some people don't have the patience. I don't.

You haven't been keeping up. Linux has come a long way. It takes less time to set up a system with Linux than to reload windows. I have 2 Windows machines(that I hate to use) I have 4 running linux, and my 80 year old Mom, has no problem useing the one I set up for her. But This is OT, It was ment for the Mac users. (wine will run on Mac)

Linux was my second favorite Peanut's character. Snoopy was my favorite.:D

Computer geeks...gun geeks...we're all the same. It's just different "hardware".
