My grandfather is a freemason and I have always been interested in what they stand for? What are there beliefs? My grandfather is not the type of person you can approach and talk to about this sort of thing.:uhoh: So what should I know about them?:)

If I understand the tenets of the Society correctly your Grandfather should be more than willing to speak with you. It is their policy not to promote but wait for a person to ask before giving out information.

The key is, you have to ask. They will never broach the subject with an outsider but are eager to talk if asked.

Membership is by invitation also as I understand it. You have to have a sponsor. Then you start the process.... various levels etc.

Well the problem is he has just been diagnosed with dementia and is half deaf. I find it easyer to have a conversation with my 2 year old nephew:( .

Free·ma·son –noun

2. (lowercase) History/Historical.
a. one of a class of skilled stoneworkers of the Middle Ages, possessing secret signs and passwords.
b. a member of a society composed of such workers, which also included honorary members (accepted masons) not connected with the building trades.

also see~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freemasonry

""Freemasonry is a fraternal organization, existing in various forms worldwide, whose membership has shared moral and metaphysical ideals and in most of its branches requires a constitutional declaration of belief in a Supreme Being.[1]

The fraternity uses the metaphor of operative stonemasons' tools and implements, against the allegorical backdrop of the building of King Solomon's Temple, to convey what is most generally defined as "a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols."[2]""

actually quite interesting. Perhaps communication with your family elder would be a bit more educational than some website.
