I have 2 Mas 49/56 rifles converted to .308.One from Centry the other a gunsmith converted to use Fal high cap + Mas mags.
I must have been lucky for both rifles shoot great without any stalls or jams as does my Sagia .308 but I like the feel of wood against metal on the Mas 49/56. IMG_0002-1.gif

Very nice.

I hope one day to acquire a good Mas 49/56 in .308. The ability to use FAL magazines would be an interesting feature.

Same here! I bought a MAS 49/56 in 308, back in 1999 for $200, and if I hadn't heard about the problems, I never would have known. They are reasonably accurate, and aren't too bad since there is a kind of muzzle brake.

There was a company that would convert for the FAL mags I contacted them a while ago but they stoped because the labor time was to expensive .
I have removed the side scope mounts and put scout scopes on the hand guards , the rifles are more compact now and I have a Mass granade launcher that I don't think I will use so I might just shorten the barrels to 16" with the muzzel brake .

I brought up the same rifle in a previous post a few months back and all I got were negative things about the MAS in .308 apparently of the crappy Century rework jobs. So now I still am on the fence about getting one :(

Like a lot of Century rifles, it's going to be a crapshoot as to weather or not you get a good one or bad one. When I went shopping for mine, I took bore lights, headspace guages, cleaning gear, calipers, the works. I heard that a lot of them had rough chambers so this was something I made a very close inspection on and I came out with a good one. Mine works quite well and I really don't have any problems with it. Well, the sights are a bit rough and the action seems like it's a bit "clinky" sounding but it's been fairly accurate and never had any stoppages so I can't complain about it. Stay away from soft civilian primers though and stick with the harder military primers with this rifle. More than a couple have blown up from that huge firing pin slam firing a soft primer.
