Freshly finsihed all steel Tomahawk

New to the forum. My name is Harlan Whitman. I want to be a knife maker when I grow up. Maybe I should be less concerned about growing up and pay more attention to making knives hmmmm...
Anywho thought it best to kick it off with the latest creation.

Inspired by cartoon tomahawks, and old military gear.

What kind of steel is it, and how thick is the stock? How did you heat treat it.

Steel - 154CM also available in 01 and S7 or whatever you want
O.D. G10 scales
Brass fasteners

The 2x4 absolutely hated this thing let me tell you...
so far chopping through a 2x4 is the only use it has seen. It did great though with that sharp long flat grind cut like a dream.


It was heat treated at 1900 degrees oil quenched, double tempered at 400 degrees, followed with a cryogenic quench.

Thanks for making me have to look up yute!!! Hahaha still not sure what it mean something about an onion in that case yeah I guess so

Ohhhhh... as for my youth I'm 24 which to me is a baby in the knife making world. Constantly being remimded I don't know that much at all.

Second, you must not know very many knife makers if you think they're very grown up.

Why'd you pick 154-CM for a small ax? I assume you didn't through harden it so how'd you quench it?

It does remind me of something out of anime. I like it. It looks like it would be fairly balanced, not a lot of bias toward the head, with that tang. What's the balance like?

Now that I think of it, does it really matter, as long as the weight is that far forward?

HSO - So the 154cm is due to requests for a stainless hawk. I normally use 01 or 5160 and if insisted upon stainless I used 440c, but being curious I wanted to try the 154cm.

In your opinion what would you have used? I would like to know.

quenched edge first untill flames stopped pulled out, put back in held tell smoke started to reside then rolled it along the top and around to the back slowly.

I tested a few failed a few and this seems to be working for me. The last one made like this was even bigger and has taken a seriously brutal testing and survived.

Don Gwinn - This is a shape that through testing with many pieces of acrylic and plywood I have come to really like due to the balance. The head weight seems to do a lot of the work for you when chopping, and the angle of the handle keeps the control very well. I feel like out of all my designs this is one of the ones that I would want to take into combat. Balance has a lot to do with preference in my opinion. This axe shape normally gets a good "oh yeah" when somone picks it up and start swinging it around.

As for the overall weight I'll have to get back to ya. No scale just moved to Portland and had to leave behind so many tools in Missouri
