He lives in the apartment and doesn’t want to deal with cleaning his own guns ( time spent, chemicals) . So at our range for $10 you can rent unlimited number of handguns. I can see his point, but I still want to shoot my own guns. At range , he rents identical models of the handguns he owns . Anyone else does this ?

So ... he owns handguns, but chooses to rent like models at the range rather than taking & shooting his own. Interesting!

Sorry, dekibg, I have never come across or even heard of that approach before.

That said, there may be beaucoup folks doing that without me having any knowledge of the practice because I live in the country and 'round here folks going shooting often only involves walking outside. ;)

When my cousin and I are outside "visiting" and someone in the distance (or closer) cuts loose with gunfire, we look at each other and say, "The Sound of Freedom!"

During the filiming of The Alamo (1960) Frankie Avalon told John Wayne he was going to get his own horse. Wayne replied:
"I've made westerns for 30 years and I've never owned a horse. You want one, you rent one." To each his own. I can see rent before you buy.

Don't think many people rent guns identical to those they own to avoid cleaning them. How would you know if your gun was reliable if you don't shoot it. Breathing the air at an indoor range(even ventilated) is probably as bad as chemicals used cleaning. I do understand cleaning in a small apartment could be a problem. I do it outside the house when the weather is decent to keep my wife happy. She hates the fumes/stink and it's healthier .

Strange indeed.
A trip to the shooting range would be an incomplete experience without the scent of Hoppes #9 lingering in the air after I clean my guns at home.

What does your friend keep the gun for? Is it for protection? Hunting? How does he know his gun still hits the point of aim if he doesn't shoot it once in a while? How does he know it even works?

When I go to the handgun range at the gun club, the first gun shot is the one I am carrying with the self-defense ammo in it. I want to know it works as carried.

I don't understand renting guns just like the one you own or having a range gun and a carry gun. I don't understand unloading the self-defense ammo and loading range ammo or removing carry magazines and using range magazines. Those don't tell you anything about your carry gun or carry ammo.

I've rented zillions of guns just to have the experience with a variety of models, and while it is nice to just hand a dirty gun back and go on with my life, I can't imagine doing it the way the fellow in the OP does.

No I don't.

Maybe he is also factoring in transporting his handguns and having unsecured handguns in his vehicle while he is at work or other task?

Stop off at the range on the way home from work, shoot a few hundred rounds through the range guns, go home or out to eat or something when you are done and not worry about the pistols. I can see an appeal. This would give you a lot of flexibility to stop by the range when you want to without having to do any prior planning or clean up afterwards.

Bottom line, if it works for him then it isn't my place to cast aspersions on his personal choice! We certainly don't need gun Nazi's telling us how we should best enjoy our sport!

Maybe he doesn't want to destroy the collector's value of his own guns. I've seen a lot of crazy things relatives have done with their firearms.
As for me, I want to shoot mine and become proficient with them too. To me that is the fun of owning them.... for others maybe not.

I have rented guns before to see if we could find one that really “clicked” with the person.

That said, $10 for unlimited rentals doesn’t sound like a bad deal. If they would only let me shoot their $40 house loads in them, they would lose me though…
