Boy, Dom1104 and I think alike because I agree 100% with both his logic and his choices:

The choice to me is obvious.

No double action revolvers, too delicate. Autos are the same way.

44 mag single action and a 22 LR single action.

make and model matter less than the simplicity of the design.

I will take it a step further and say that both guns are likely to be Rugers, and that is predicated on their well-known reputation for ruggedness and reliability.

I have been thinking about my choice and the Ruger Montado in 45 Colt would be a great gun for this, barrel might be a little short at 3.5" but other wise it might be great paired up with a Bearcat.

TC Contender in .44 Magnum, and a .22WMR barrel for the same frame if allowed. Other wise the TC Encore in .44 Magnum and a TC Contender in .22WMR.

jm

OK I guess I will go with a pair of single action revolvers with 6 inch tubes in .44 mag. and .22 WMR

Isn't the Encore a rifle ?

The actual odds of being able to survive that trip with the equipment listed at that time are so small, that this strikes me as a pointless exercise.

You would most likely barter and/or work for more supplies and equipment once there. Or, the less social and moral of us might use our 21st century armament to resort to banditry.

An EAA witness p-carry in 10mm mag with 200 rounds.
A buckmark camper with a Tactical solutions barrel, acc. rail and integrated sight rail with 500 rounds of CCI minimag.
And a rail light for each of them with extra batteries.

Kim can keep the change from the rest of the unnecessary ammo.

:D

Rimfire pistol - Ruger Charger, modified to full auto. I think with that, and a few 50 round mags, I'm kinda a big deal in 1650.

Centerfire pistol - Smith & Wesson’s .460 XVR. Take half the ammo in .45 Colt and the other half in .460 SW.

hmmmm

Sig 220 for a large caliber gun

Ruger MarkII for the rimfire.

I figure the .45 for anything two legged or for bears, lion or tigers....

MArk II for lunch... Squirrels, rabbits, or snakes

I'd take one of those .50 BMG pistols and some sort of miniature .22LR Gattling Gun thing. Does that count as a pistol?

Not because they're practical, its just that those are the two guns I would want to put a few rounds through before I died if limited to a rimfire and a centerfire handgun.

I say this because I would have no intention of TRYING to get back to the Pacific, as I would rather give 1650 a shot... I've already lived "here".

I would then write a letter addressed to Michael J. Fox to be delivered to him in the future after my DeLorean (which I will invent well before the 1980s) is struck by lightning.

I would then rip-off every great symphony yet to be written, starting slow as to not be labeled a heretic and burned at the stake. I'd start with Bach melodies and probably be doing Zappa covers and free-jazz by the time Bach was actually born. Then I'd invent the 1911, and the IPA.

I'd give the 1911 some alternate, ridiculous name, just to piss you guys off. :neener:

Some interesting reasoning in the posts on this thread.

Originally I might have said something like a smith 686 5inch or a Smith 29 six inch with a smith 22 revolver of some sort.

Having read though some have spoken of the ruggedness of a single action revolver. The Thompson Contender is a great idea.

I am now thinking that a TC with an extra long 44 magnum barrel would be ideal for my long range, large game getter. Still going with a Smith 22 revolver.

Rules didn't specify what size the handgun had to be:
so, for centerfire:
.45/70 Gov't with 10" barrel has a twist rate of 14, groove diameter of 0.458 and weighs 4.7 pounds.
Magnum Research BFR. Stands for Bif Freakin' Revolver! (actually, Biggest Finest) .45-70, rugged single action and powerful enough to take down anything on this continent.
Rimfire- easy, this Ruger Single Six

Maybe on another day, I'd pick something different... but today, right now, my sections are thus:

Ruger Blackhawk .357 Magnum.
Ruger Single Six .22 LR/Mag.

I'll let my long guns take care of anything too big for the .357 to deal with. And that would be a CZ 550 Safari in .375 H&H.

Knowing I would have to come back home if I reached the other side, I might take a hell of a long time getting there. Instead of completing the quest I might just establish my own empire... and since this would predate Lewis and Clark, and would leave messages and things along L&C's trail that would really screw with their minds. Like putting up a fence around huge areas that said "no trespassing" and dire warnings of dragons and other creatures. Just for fun. Kim didn't say we couldn't screw with history.

I am thinking big bore for self defense. The rimfire is for food.

How about a hk in 45. Any good 22 revolver with a 6 inch barrel.

I'd have to go with a .22 LR and a .357 revolver.

But I think you'd be better off with better equipment.
And as far as the rifle with 800 rounds and the handgun with 1K rounds, why?
We're not at war - if you can't make it across the country with only one handgun and a few loaded mags, you're doing something wrong.

Instead of carrying that much ammo (probably 60 pounds) you'd be better off to carry a whole lot of rice, lentils, hershey bars, and slim jims.

BTW - I have broken a Ruger single action revolver. All I had to do was shoot a few rounds out of it.
Any guy can break.
